About a year ago I heard that EBI had to ask TikTok (yes really) to stop scraping the EMDB so aggressively. As it turns out, ByteDance was training an EM reconstruction model. Funny how the world works sometimes.

@cryomariena Not a dedicated course at the uni, but there are opportunities to take such a course for PhD students, postdocs and PIs.

Hive mind: does your uni/institute offer a class in TEM specific for structural biologists? Out of pure curiosity.

@cryomariena High symmetries are somewhat prone to be a hassle for proper alignment (you need to be at high resolution right away). Don't know if you had those issues but I wouldn't expect D39 to be a good first experience 😉

@bforsb yes (wait, should I be concerned/alarmed/horrified? .. sorry, I have trouble reading reactions, even by electronic means!). But this was 20yrs ago, so no need to be too exited 😁. I quickly moved to adenovirus (icosahedral, pseudo T=25), though!

June Almeida is the virologist who first discovered the coronavirus in 1967 using negative stain electron microscopy. @Sci_Hans Absolutely, I agree that this is fair use. It's a great tool to make sure the language barrier is lower, offer a sample of what the recipient might expect, and generally make the playing field more level. Just beware of how much you let it dictate; be yourself.

@bforsb ChatGPT obviously can't know your motivations and write a whole letter for you. However, I've recently found out that it can be useful in giving ideas to improve the flow and conciseness of the letter I wrote!

Trust me, personal motivations letters should not be written by an AI. chatGPT sounds like a thesaurus and I find it very hard to make it convey a personal tone and interest. It would have to know YOU to do it right, and only you know yourself. 1/4

Shoving that task over on AI is bad for all the same reasons. A personal motivation letter is not meant to be honed to perfection, nor am I expecting the people behind them to be. People are real, and their efforts matter. End of rant. 4/4

It's not always easy to know why you want to do something or express it coherently or even honestly. I too have balanced my true motivation with what sounds better, I think most of us have. But this is a USEFUL exercise; take stock and think about what you are doing and why. 3/4
