Despite law that DCPS must fund local school budgets with no cuts next year & central funded on the rest, at yesterday’s Council hearing Dep Mayor & Chancellor testified they do not expect to comply. Only assurance was that no school will lose more than 5% of this year’s budget.

We do this song and dance around school budgets annually in DC. If we refuse to address the real problem — the number of schools in DC and the ways they siphon resources off of each other — we will be here next year. There is a better way.

DC has too many schools and not enough students. Unchecked school growth causes the greatest harm to students facing the biggest barriers to learning as lower enrollment at neighborhood schools leads to smaller budgets, staffing reductions, and program cuts.
