On November 27, 1095, at the Council of Clermont in France, Pope Urban II delivered a sermon calling for a military expedition that initiated the First Crusade. His request was a direct response to appeals from Byzantine Emperor Alexios I Komnenos, who requested military support to help repel Seljuk Turks from Anatolia. Here are the key elements of Pope Urban II's request to the crusaders: Libertate Jerusalem: While the initial request from the Byzantine emperor was to aid his empire, Urban II expanded the objective to the liberation of the Holy Land, specifically the reconquest of Jerusalem and the Holy Sepulchre from Muslim control. Remission of Sins: Urban II offered a unique spiritual incentive, declaring that participants who died in battle or during the journey would receive immediate forgiveness of all their past sins and eternal salvation. "Deus Vult" (God Wills It): The call mobilized knights and soldiers to take up the cross, often sewing it onto their clothes, and march east to "free the eastern churches" and protect Eastern Christians. Stop Internal Warfare: Urban urged European Christians to stop fighting one another and turn their violent energies against a common enemy, rather than engaging in internal conflicts. Support for the Poor: Urban requested that the rich aid the poor to equip them for the fight, indicating the campaign was for all social classes.

@dlongenecker1 No one has helped the poor more than America. Stopping a nuclear bomb getting in the hands of the Mad Mullahs of Shia Islam is God's will. To protect all mankind the war is sadly necessary.

@ga_devitto If we were in the middle ages Catholics would justarrived in Brazil in 1500 with the Portuguese explorer Pedro Álvares Cabral. The first Catholic Mass was celebrated on April 26, 1500. You assume much and know very little.

Perhaps neocons will understand it with this example: if we were in the Middle Ages, the Pope would have already excommunicated the entire Trump administration and called for a Crusade against Israel for the harm it is causing to local Christian communities and pilgrims in the Holy Places. So, be glad we are in a peaceful era in which the Pope only advocates for peace and diplomacy.

I’m afraid Pope Leo is a Francis version 2. Seems to have a critical bias of all things Trump. We have a woke liberal pope. Again. Tragic.

@ClarkeMicah Corruption, all mankind share that. Only the Mad Mullahs of Iran share a suicidal belief in an apocalyptic end times scenario brought on by war that will bring about judgement "2/3 of evil world killed" and their world Islamic supremacy.

Among many other things, perhaps. The mullahs are very corrupt. A thriving middle class, prosperous by its own efforts, could bypass that.
Just asking@18tintaweb

@ClarkeMicah @realzoestrimpel Would a thriving middle class mean that people would be less attracted to the IRGC, as they could have decent career prospects?

"Have you been there? " Entered from Afghanistan I left months before the Shah fell. The valleys had hundreds of aircraft Interviewed by SAVAK. Many would not look me in the eye nor sell me food. We ate drank in Kurdish restaurants listening to live music. Years later UK I met an Iranian pilot at my mother's Church in hiding moving town to town. Later at OZ English language school met 12 Iranian women wives of scientists come to study making heavy water. I tried to learn as much as I could said I had been in Iran Tehran Isfahan had some knowledge of Islam. Next day they never returned. The head of the college called me in, had I said anything? I knew what they were planning a nuclear device.

@ZoeJardiniere I know London well my children and grandchildren are there. I lived there for 25 years. As to overrun with "brown people" you said that, and why? Is that your white middle class privilege coming out as a rather twisted distorted form of inverse racism?

@chrisbreadon Mate you really need to check out London one of these days - and then decide if it’s “overrun by brown people” or those of us who live here are in a “privilaged” bubble far away from it all 😅

"deeply undistinguished, one was a traitor and one thrice denied his Lord" Peter According to Christian tradition, almost all of the original twelve apostles were martyred for their faith, with the notable exception of John the Apostle. Who among us is prepared to die for their faith?

.@duncanhegan1 2/3 Several of the male apostles were deeply undistinguished, one was a traitor and one thrice denied his Lord. What matters about Christ is the way in which He was *different* from other men of his time, not the ways in which he was the same.
Duncan Hegan@DuncanHegan1

@ClarkeMicah It doesn’t make much sense to invoke Mary Magdalene as an example of a Christian priest when you believe the priesthood didn’t exist in her time and therefore she was not a priest!

@ClarkeMicah @DuncanHegan1 If people wrote the Bible it would be"Christ would appear, and all would know him at once". But that is not what happens. Mary mistakes him for the gardener. Though knowing him well , she did not know who he actual would become.
