The iconic church and central landmark of San Miguel de Allende, Mexico. Known for its striking neo-Gothic façade with twin pink-tinted towers, it dominates the city’s skyline and is one of the most photographed churches in Mexico. The current façade, designed by self-taught indigenous stonemason Zeferino Gutiérrez between 1880 and 1888, was inspired by European Gothic churches seen in postcards and lithographs, though it reflects a unique, imaginative interpretation rather than a direct replica.
The church’s origins date back to the late 17th century, with a traditional Mexican baroque design. Inside, the church features a 17th-century layout, original ribbed vaults, and pointed arches reflecting the neo-Gothic style, combined with rich Mexican baroque ornamentation. Highlights include the Cristo de la Conquista (Christ of the Conquest), a 16th-century statue made of cornstalk paste from Michoacán, and stained-glass windows depicting scenes from the life of Saint Michael the Archangel, the church’s patron.
