@GGunthorp Makes sense. Quality of life is really undervalued in farming/ ranching communities. Partly why not very many young people are entering , we tend to oversimplify and glorify the way of life but the reality is it is extremely hard and labor intensive

@ecperner Payback is not good. It’s about quality of life. We’d like to be done with slaughter one day a week in a reasonable time.

Want to hear some exciting news? We bit the bullet and bought a new to us semi automatic scalder and dehairer. Capacity should be around 25 pigs per hour. Paid around 25% of new cost. New would cost around $160,000. It’s headed home from Alabama.

We built a USDA inspected processing plant on the farm 20 years ago. Some random pictures from yesterday.

It’s unpopular because you’re choosing the planet—and your version of what that looks like—over the betterment of humanity. Humans do best on an animal-based diet. Not only should we consume animals, but we can raise and harvest them in ways that minimize damage or even improve the health of the earth. Closed-loop systems and regenerative practices are far superior to the monocrop agriculture that dominates most of the Western world. So again, your position is unpopular for the same reason people now believe Bill Gates is trying to depopulate the earth: your goal is not compatible with human life and prosperity.

Unpopular opinion: if we want to save Earth, we all need to shift to a plant-based diet NOW.

Had an interesting conversation with what could have been a potential customer. Our customer relations team (my wife) says I can’t talk to people anymore. Customer asks all the usual farm practice questions which I answer honestly. Then asks a question I’ve only been asked one other time. Do you feel bad charging so much for milk? I said no.. then asked the following question . Do you feel bad for spending so little that over 100,000 dairy farmers have been unable to make enough money to continue farming even while taking government money that is supposed to keep them farming? He didn’t know how to respond but seemed offended. Did I handle this right? My wife says I should be written up for some HR policy we should have if we had a HR department. I t was strangely satisfying! Back to work!

@Vitruvian_Triad I was “sent” to England and Scotland the summer after high school as FFA exchange student. Stayed on 11 different farms. They all had sheep. Now I have some sheep in the east. Not 100 though. The rest of the world laughs at US sheep scale in east. Wool is magic. No $ though

Back of envelope math (averages) $1.70/lb for American Wool 7 lbs of wool per sheep, per year 1000 head of sheep on a Western Ranch (1/10th that for East Coast) Tell your kid to forsake college for .... $11,900 per year revenue (PRE expenses, and tax 😬)
Casey B. Head@CaseyBHead

In 1840 there were 4 million sheep in New England. In 2026 there are about 55,000. American wool comes from Texas and California now. But what if instead of sending your kids off to college, and away from their hometown, you sent them to the fields to tend a flock?

@CamiDRyan My father was a big chemical buyer. Salesmen would drink glyphosate in meetings to prove it was safe. This is no tall tale, my dad loved glyphosate. It paid for many of his work bonuses. One of the salesmen later died of non-Hodgekins lymphoma.

Glyphosate chatter has flared up again..and so is the tired argument: “if it’s so safe, drink it”. Safety depends on use, not taste. Safety means used “as directed”. We don’t chug dish soap or shampoo either. “Drink it” isn’t the mic drop some think it is.

This photo is making the rounds on some meat cutting Facebook pages. This happens, and oftentimes the distributor can get you a credit back from the packer as long as you document it.

The most important fight of my life isn’t in the ring. I’m not fighting for a belt. I’m fighting for our health.  Processed foods are killing us. We have been lied to and we need to eat real food again.

Here is some roller/crimping action. I was able to rent this crimper locally from Custom Made Products in Humboldt Iowa. They typically rent smooth rollers but also have some crimpers available.
