genuinely one of my favourite things about the show - the dialogue took the feelings of the characters and, by extension, their audience seriously, even if the show itself was still a silly drama

Dawson’s Creek was an outlier even back then; critics argued it was unrealistic to portray teens with such extensive vocabulary who are so deeply self referential. But if you know ball you get that the show never spoke down to its viewers, which was a huge part of its success.
