Engineers in Kenya built a tunnel underneath a highway to reconnect a centuries-old elephant migration route that had been cut off by new construction.
Then they had to figure out how to get the elephants to actually use it.
Workers lined the entire inside of the concrete tunnel with fresh elephant dung to create a familiar scent trail. A bull elephant named Tony followed it through first, then led his entire herd to the other side.
The tunnel is fourteen feet high. The migration route is hundreds of years old.

I thank His Excellency Antonio Guterres, @antonioguterres the United Nations Secretary General for appointing me as the next Executive Director of United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime and the Director General of UN office in Vienna @UN_Vienna.
I appreciate the Secretary General’s confidence in my ability to steer these two important offices at the Under Secretary General level, at this critical point.
Coming on the eve of the International Women’s Day, this appointment is demonstrative of the UNSG’s belief in women leadership.
I sincerely thank H.E. President William Ruto @WilliamsRuto for the confidence he bestowed upon me in serving him as his, and the first, National Security Advisor of the Republic of Kenya, as Secretary to the National Security Council, and for enabling me to take this global assignment, demonstrating yet again his belief in Kenya making its contribution to the community of nations.
I look forward to serving at this new mandate diligently and flying Kenya’s flag high, to the best of my ability.
Thank You Kenya for preparing me to serve humanity!

The world, Europe, and Spain have faced this critical moment before. In 2003, a few irresponsible leaders dragged us into an illegal war in the Middle East that brought nothing but insecurity and pain.
Our response then must be our response now:
NO to violations of international law.
NO to the illusion that we can solve the world’s problems with bombs.
NO to repeating the mistakes of the past.
NO TO WAR.

@kipmurkomen Service to your country is service to humanity. While we celebrate at home, these heroes ensure our peace. Thank you for recognizing the immense sacrifice of our security teams this Christmas. 🇰🇪✨
English

The majority of our security officers are spending this Christmas season away from their loved ones, selflessly ensuring that our country remains safe and secure.
This afternoon, we visited the Todo KDF Camp in Kolowa Sub-County, Baringo County, to celebrate Christmas with them and to express our appreciation for the excellent work they are doing.
The officers are part of the multi-agency Operation Maliza Uhalifu (OMU) security team, whose efforts have successfully contained banditry and restored calm and normalcy across the Kerio Valley region.
I salute every officer, together with their families, for the great sacrifice they make in service to our nation.
I was accompanied by the DIG-KPS Eliud Lagat, DIG-APS Gilbert Masengeli, and other senior government officials.

Congratulations to Prof. @Phoebe_Okowa on your historic election to the #ICJ. We read how you excelled in a rural secondary school, and today you’ve risen to one of the world’s highest judicial seats. Your journey is a testament that no dream is too big & no beginning too small.

ICJ ELECTIONS:
Kenya has never had a Judge at the International Court of Justice @ICJ_org. The election of Prof. @PhoebeOkowa by the UN General Assembly and the UN Security Council in New York earlier today marks a historic moment not only for Kenya, but for the Court as Prof. Okowa becomes only the seventh female Judge of the Court in its 80-year history.
It has been months of intense campaigns and I am grateful to the leadership of the @ForeignOfficeKE for overall strategic support, the indefatigable team at the @KenyaMissionUN that I am proud to lead for all the heavy-lifting and all Member States of the UN for their support.
I would like to congratulate the Permanent Missions of Ghana, Nigeria and Sierra Leone for putting forward strong candidates and running a cordial and brotherly campaign.
Congratulations, Prof. Okowa.

What’s happening in Sudan is horrifying.
Innocent lives destroyed as powerful allies and sponsors quietly fuel the violence. The silence and complicity are just as deadly.
The world must not turn a blind eye.

Raila Odinga was a true champion of democracy. A child of independence, he endured decades of struggle and sacrifice for the broader cause of freedom and self-governance in Kenya. Time and again, I personally saw him put the interests of his country ahead of his own ambitions. Like few other leaders anywhere, he was willing to choose the path of peaceful reconciliation without compromising his core values. Through his life, Raila Odinga set an example not just for Kenyans, but across Africa and around the world. I know he will be missed. Michelle and I send our deepest condolences to his family and to the people of Kenya.
