Friends for this Third Sunday in Ordinary Time, our first reading from the prophet Isaiah and our Gospel from Matthew both have a section that’s a little weird. While most preachers skip over these sections to get to the better-known and understandable parts, I want to dwell, on purpose, on the strange parts—and they have to do with the lands of Zebulun and Naphtali.

@catholicpat Then the only solution is for bishops to get on the same page about how the Novus Ordo is to be celebrated, and require their parish priests to deliver homilies regarding difficult topics (abortion, transgenderism, immigration, gay marriage etc) consistent with catechism.

Every Catholic knows someone who drives 30 minutes to Mass, passing three parishes along the way. Maybe you are that person. But church-hopping is killing our parishes. I get the appeal. The music, homilies, or community are better somewhere else. But when faithful Catholics scatter across a diocese chasing the perfect parish, nobody builds anything. It causes a dilution of resources. People aren’t working together because they don’t see each other. That parish you hate might need you. (more in comments)

There was a line from Zohran Mamdani’s inaugural address yesterday that took my breath away. He said he intended to replace “the frigidity of rugged individualism with the warmth of collectivism.” Collectivism in its various forms is responsible for the deaths of at least one hundred million people in the last century. Socialist and Communist forms of government around the world today—Venezuela, Cuba, North Korea, etc.—are disastrous. Catholic social teaching has consistently condemned socialism and has embraced the market economy, which people like Mayor Mamdani caricature as “rugged individualism.” In fact, it is the economic system that is based upon the rights, freedom, and dignity of the human person. For God’s sake, spare me the “warmth of collectivism.”

Newsom, who has directed billions of gallons of water into the Pacific Ocean, fumed that Trump would blame him. “One can't even respond to it… This guy wanted to politicize it. I, I, I, I, I have a lot of thoughts and I know what I want to say. I won't.” Total clown. California is in flames, largely thanks to him, and he is crying that someone criticized him. President Biden was seen shuffling along with Border Patrol agents who needed to slow down so he could keep up with them. Trump met with Texas Governor Greg Abbott. Biden was accompanied by impeached Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro Mayorkas.
