🇺🇸/IRAN - USS Tripoli, part of the 31st US Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU) is traveling to the Middle East with its 2 San Antonio-class support ships. Were the Tripoli traveling alone it would limit its utility to just providing additional warplanes for ongoing operations. With the 2 support ships it will be able to conduct interdiction missions against shipping in the region including boarding and seizing ships with rigid-hull inflatable boats and a variety of helicopters available via the San Antonio-class ships. This also means approximately 1,200 Marines will be in the region to conduct ground operations. Only 1,200 of the total 2,500 Marines of the MEU are part of a ground combat element, the rest are for command, air combat, and logistics - the other 2,500 personnel making up the 5,000 number often cited are US Navy personnel operating the ships themselves.
