Why do I need a firmware update to use my own living room?
Three years ago, I decided my house needed to be a "smart home."
I spent $800 on WiFi-enabled lightbulbs.
This was a catastrophic mistake.
Yesterday, the internet went out for ten minutes.
My wife tried to turn on the kitchen lights using the physical wall switch like a Luddite.
The bulbs factory reset themselves.
Now they cycle through rave colors while emitting a high-pitched pairing frequency.
I spent my entire Saturday trying to connect my kitchen ceiling to our router using a 2.4GHz band.
I am a 52-year-old man standing on a stepping stool screaming at a lightbulb because my phone can't find its Bluetooth signal.
Tomorrow I'm going to Home Depot to buy $2 incandescent bulbs.
I want my house to be stupid again.

"The Thing From Another World" was released on this day in 1951. Groundbreaking sci-fi/horror adaptation of the classic Joseph W. Campbell novella from director Christian Nyby and producer Howard Hawks. Highlights: Outstanding cinematography by Russell Harlan; memorable Dimitri Tiomkin score. While "The Thing From Another World" was moderately successful upon release, it found a wider audience decades later on broadcast television. In 1982, John Carpenter directed a remake of the film that many people (including myself) consider to be superior to the original. "The Thing From Another World" is one of the most influential horror movies ever made.

@robkroese Yeah. OK. It's minimally that one step up from "staring at the wall". By forcing movement, it reduces the pain of no-movement. It exacts a charge, IME, of extraneous movement. But that's probably better overall.

@idsblake It does for me, because even going through 20 iterations of a passage is better than staring at it for 4 hours and getting nowhere

As someone who has written 35 novels, I can confidently rank these methods of brainstorming from worst to best:
1) staring at a wall
2) bouncing ideas off whoever happens to be nearby
3) talking to ChatGPT
4) talking to a brilliant novelist who has infinite time and patience

The issue with these romanticized takes is twofold: 1. They assume a universal, timeless creative process that has never actually existed 2. They assume there is always proven benefit from a personal development perspective to maintaining that specific approach
