On this day in 1966, DeBakey performed the first successful placement of a left ventricular assist device on a patient with a history of severe aortic insufficiency and mitral stenosis. The patient was ultimately discharged from the hospital and resumed normal activities.

The biggest threat to CABG is not stents, industry or the size of the incision and length of hospitalization and recovery. It is the substandard training and the fake case numbers that most programs offer these days leading to recent grads who can’t do the operation safely.

On this day in 1954, Lillehei and his team performed his first open heart operation, a repair of a VSD using crosscirculation in a 15-month-old boy. An adult (usually a parent) with the same blood type was used more or less as the heart-lung machine.

On this day in 1960, Braunwald and Morrow performed the first mitral valve replacement on a 44-year-old woman with cardiac failure caused by mitral regurgitation. They used a cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) machine that Braunwald helped design.
