POTUS is laying out two courses of action—a negotiated settlement, or a major escalation. There is a third option, and he should take it: recognize there is no way to force a positive outcome and simply leave. The region is not ours to fix. President Reagan chose this path in Lebanon in ‘84, withdrawing U.S. forces after the Beirut barracks bombing once it became clear the mission’s stabilization goals could not be met, effectively ending direct American military involvement and avoiding a deeper quagmire and long-term entrenchment in the region. A negotiated settlement is unlikely to work or be taken seriously by the Iranians unless we make concessions on the enrichment issue. As we saw yesterday in the SOH, the IRGC is empowered to act without the consent of the civilian leadership, so it’s likely they won’t honor any deal reached. A major escalation will lead to a very destructive outcome for Iran, the region, and eventually the U.S. If POTUS chooses brute force and targets civilian infrastructure, we will create another generation of radicalized Iranians who will rally around the regime and escalate the war by any means possible. If POTUS opts to strike the civilian infrastructure, declare victory, and then leave, we will only further erode our standing in the world, the petrodollar, and eventually our status as the world’s reserve currency holder. We need to get out now. Don’t double down on failure. Avoid the sunken cost trap, leave now, and put America’s interests first.

🚨 Donald Trump claims a U.S. Navy destroyer intercepted an Iranian-flagged cargo ship in the Gulf of Oman—and says U.S. forces “blew a hole in the engine room” after the crew refused orders—adding the vessel is now in U.S. custody. If true, that’s a direct military strike despite a supposed ceasefire. No independent confirmation yet of these claims.

2 days after Trump made 13 celebratory posts in a hour claiming that Iran surrendered to all his demands and the war is over, he’s back threatening to blow up power plants and bridges.

“Somebody shorted the oil markets today by hundreds of millions of dollars exactly 20 minutes before Trump made his announcement that everything was going to be great. And if you see that once, it could be a coincidence. But that’s happened at least three times, if not more, since the war began. That’s a pattern.” “And what that suggests is that there’s rampant corruption and insider self-dealing going on with the president’s up and down predictions of what’s going to happen tomorrow in the negotiations and in the markets. And I’m sure that that’s being investigated. We can’t prove it, but it seems like the corruption that we’re seeing in our government, maybe not the President, but people who are in the know and the markets, is having a priority over the actual negotiations to end the war. And that’s a crazy thing that our system has never seen before.”

"Trump is really good about asserting his own reality ... but Americans aren't going to buy it if things don't change and change soon. And even if they do improve, the higher prices are going to remain for a while," said @JonLemire.

Extraordinary the number of #MAGA folks that humiliated themselves yesterday pretending Trump was telling the truth & that Iran capitulated to all demands, w/ the strait was open back to pre-war traffic. Biggest loser was again @ClayTravis

For years, @RepThomasMassie was popular among MAGA: until he opposed a couple of Trump policies, and Trump told his followers to hate Massie him because he's a "grandstander" who accomplishes nothing. Overnight, huge numbers of MAGA followers started reciting that like some mantra. Last night, Massie just helped defeat renewal of warrantless domestic spying on Americans: accomplishing more -- just in this alone -- than 90% of House members.

🚨 JUST IN—IT’S OFFICIAL: Conservatives have BLOCKED an attempt to RAM THROUGH a 5 year extension of FISA in the dead of night, extending it by only 2 weeks @timburchett, @laurenboebert, and @RepThomasMassie are out here celebrating a win against the deep state 🇺🇸🔥 “They try to bring us in all these classified briefings and tell us how DANGEROUS it is to have warrants to spy on American citizens. The briefing that we're never going to get is, ‘hi, our agency has been given TOO MUCH power by Congress!” — Rep. Boebert — Asked about how this current FISA bill relates to the powers used to spy on President Trump’s campaign, Massie said: “Today, I went in the SCIF and saw two TOP SECRET documents that showed this program is getting worse—NOT better!” When I asked how extending FISA impacts everyday Americans, Massie replied: “If you get on the government's naughty list—regardless of who is in the White House—they could put your name in this, find things about you, and then go recreate ANOTHER evidence trail to discover that because they're NEVER going to say they used FISA.” — When I asked Burchett what he thinks of FISA, and if it’s used to spy on aliens, he said: “I don’t believe in FISA. The only reason aliens don’t come down here is because there IS not intelligent life.” 🤣🔥

You always have to pay attention to what is actually happening, not what Trump says is happening. Because Trump lies about everything. Too often media serves as Trump’s daily stenographer, passing along his propaganda verbatim.

Donald Trump just wrapped up a disastrous speech in Phoenix, Arizona, at a Turning Point USA event. He started by lying about a supposed deal with Iran, claiming, “We have now secured the Strait of Hormuz. It is ours.” He also said that the United States and Iran would be excavating nuclear sites together to collect “nuclear dust.” Iran has denied all of these claims. Trump also falsely claimed that Iran had announced the Strait of Hormuz is “fully open and ready for business.” That is not what Iran said. Iranian officials have stated the strait will remain open under their control—specifically under the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps—using coordinated, predetermined routes. They plan to charge tolls and assert full control and sovereignty over the Strait of Hormuz.
