@TLRailUK can you stop advertising that the 07:42 from Harpenden is a 12 car service. You have 4 carriages at the back all locked out of use

The Russian ambassador talking about legitimate elections would be hilarious if the subject wasn’t so serious.

@TLRailUK Thanks. I get that you guys are trying to get the trains back in the right places, but these last minute changes to stopping patterns are so frustrating. To wait 30mins for a train and then for it to cancel stops is worse because I could have taken an earlier fast train to Luton

@jonholman When you are near St Albans City or Luton, check the journey planner, and see if there is a schedule to change for. Otherwise, I would advise travelling to Bedford and coming back on a return journey. I am sorry to hear of the delay to your journey . ^Ben

@TLRailUK why are you running all the fast trains to Bedford but not stopping anywhere else? Trying to get to HPD and every train is just going from St Pancras to Bedford. No trains for the past 30mins and not another on the schedule

@AvantiWestCoast Thanks Pete. You’ll understand I don’t exactly trust the website….if the train had departed I would be on my way to Manchester by now.

Almost right. Let's start with a theoretical reference. The best book I have ever read on strategy is "Good strategy, bad strategy" by Richard Rumelt. It's a 2011 book that I found more incisive and useful than other famous Bibles on the topic (like "Playing to win" for example, which somehow seemed average to me). On the practical side, a strategy must be created in order for the business to fill a gap: the gap between the status quo (the "as-is") and the "to-be". If you don't have a clue about your to-be, then I can hardly imagine you'll come up with a coherent strategy. At best, you'll end with a laundry list of desires. In many contexts, the words "strategy" and "strategic" are misused. They become irrelevant additions to planning, resourcing, goal-setting, coming up with a mission, a vision, etc. None of those things is, by itself, a strategy. All of those are part of a well-thought strategy. I agree that strategy is about HOW the business will move forward, but the core of a strategy has 3 components: 1) diagnosis 2) guiding policy 3) action. The guiding policy serves as the compass, outlining the approach to overcome the obstacles ("fill the gap") identified in the diagnosis. It's showing you the way forward, but it doesn't go into the nitty-gritty details of the journey. For those details, we turn to actions. These are the tangible steps that align with the guiding policy. They encompass well-coordinated policies, the allocation of resources, and a set of actions carefully crafted to execute the guiding policy effectively. This is the "doing" bit. If you give me a strategy without actions, that's BS. I can tell you right now that strategy is going to fail and one year from now a bunch of executives are going to get creative on explaining why they didn't reach their objectives. Important point, from experience: a strategy is about what a business does NOT do as much as it is about what it does. The two go hand in hand.
Shreyas Doshi@shreyas

Always remember: strategy is first & foremost about the How. Strategy is not the What. It can state the What, but without the How, it isn’t actually a strategy. It is just a hope, a manifesto, a goal, a fantasy, a collection of aspirational empty words. It isn’t a real strategy.

@ConsultGently Listen to the EAs / Assistants. I mean really listen and help them. Give them as much respect as you would the CEO because they make an organisation tick. They can either make an engagement impossible or help you through impossible obstacles.

Starting work at a new client is like visiting a new country for the first time. And you don't want to stand out like a tourist. Many of the people you'll be working with—"the locals"—may have been working there for a long time. They might not appear open to ideas from outside, but perhaps they've been burnt in the past. The consulting tourists who came and tried to help last time might not have been as respectful or as useful to help the local economy as they promised. The environment's stayed a comfortable and safe place to be. Until you came along. To build trusted relationships with client "locals" that will maximise your chance of making an impact, do the basics right. • Do the research - what's going on in the news, the sector, the organisation, the individuals is easy to find on the internet...and important to keep up to date. • Learn the language - each organisation and industry has its own. • Respect the customs - the rituals and operating rhythms of how work is planned, done and celebrated. And remember: the more countries you've visited, the easier it is to adapt to the new one. Who else experiences this?
