@teozard não a conversa a ter é sobre não meterem o preço final nas etiquetas do supermercado, porque o imposto é diferente de terrinha para terrinha ou o crl
Português

@AkaiCaillou i agree with y'all but why the fuck do you call men "XY"s. do y'all really have to be transphobic about this
English

@InVitroFuture @zanyfen @morallawwithin oh i don't think LLMs are moral patients or, if they are, it's in a very different way from us. does data die if we shoot him? not if he's been backed up somewhere
English

@kihelpata @zanyfen @morallawwithin as opposed to the parts that do lossy semitextual information processing about this, which I hope will be of some value to others but which I don't think have any inherent claim to be treated as such.
And if it is the latter you care most about, I'm not sure LLMs are any better
English

@InVitroFuture @zanyfen @morallawwithin --- but all these limitations seem to obfuscate the point that, just like data, they are able to hold a conversation convincingly, which is presumably what makes me say that data is conscious in the first place
English

@InVitroFuture @zanyfen @morallawwithin but maybe you'd say he isn't? like idk if there's anything data can do that an LLM of today can't, because the limitations of LLMs are kind of trivial --- they degrade over long chat windows and have bad memory, and yeah they don't have always-on cameras to take in sense data etc
English

@InVitroFuture @zanyfen @morallawwithin i don't know enough about frog brains to answer this well, but
- i think that frog subjective experience exists, but is different from "human consciousness" in some relevant senses
- i think other bits of the frog brain that are doing whatever the cortex is doing in us play a
English

@InVitroFuture @zanyfen @morallawwithin to keep the cortex going; i'm just not convinced that that something accounts for the richness of human consciousness
English

@InVitroFuture @zanyfen @morallawwithin besides, we shouldn't expect isolated cortex to behave normally; it doesn't exist isolated in the wild! but that argument is more like "heartless animals lose brain function, therefore the heart is necessary for consciousness". certainly the rest of the brain is doing something
English

@zanyfen @InVitroFuture @morallawwithin i just do not believe that consciousness is meaningfully related to animalness at a fundamental level. take away all of my drives, take away all of my feelings, take away my brainstems need to control my heart and my breathing — i can still see, and think, and speak
English

@zanyfen @InVitroFuture @morallawwithin and i also take a functionalist approach, because i'm open to the option of "weird consciousness". if i'm focused on a structure (esp. one as primitive as the brainstem) then i'm at the outset excluding a bunch of things that don't have that structure but could be conscious
English

@ellagoer_t4t like that drawing fully looks like it's "shot" from a low angle
