Because sentient animals evolved to pursue their own flourishing, not our instrumental goals, any workflow that exploits them as biological machines can in theory be made more efficient, reproducible, and humane by replacing the animals with designed-to-purpose synthetic systems.

@MaxyTaxy Sometimes democratic supermajorities are catastrophically wrong about important moral issues, such that the best hope for medium-term social change is to give a small number of private individuals (who may have more eccentric opinions) massive power to steer society on pet topics

Rest of the paragraph is a doozy btw—Edwards claims it's in the slavers' interest to treat the "stock" well, but between the lines we can see the bottomless cruelty we know about from non-industry sources. I 100% agree there are moral differences, but the parallels aren't subtle

Weirdly he signals he knows this, but still claims pigs are "objectively" LS (ie, unlike others who've been called that). Does he think pigs agree they should be BBQed? Obv not. He just begs the question—as slavers did—that "subhuman" perspectives don't have to be accounted for

@Draren_Thiralas I'm making an argument directly grounded in Kantian constructivism, which is probably the most logocentric and cerebral meta-ethical theory on offer and frequently criticized on those grounds

@InVitroFuture My point is, your construction of morality, with its focus on suffering as the main criterion, is specifically constructed to support your pre-determined conclusions. There are other constructions that are equally or more natural.

@etirabys @SelonNerias Everyone involved is generally committed in principle to The Good Of The Movement Above My Own anyway. Where I think it gets thorny is whether empirically the cost to the movement of owning up to the problem and implementing a crude solution is worse than the slow drip of scandal

@etirabys @SelonNerias Personally I feel very little compunction about it on principle, it seems extremely obvious that the endemic problem of men in radical movements abusing their authority causes more harm than our having to remain at most second-in-command would.

Fine, if nobody else wants to say it I will: organizations whose members have good reason not to appeal to external systems of accountability, like the cops or press, should not be led by men

The problem is Judaism is fairly decentralized. There are certainly multiple powerful institutions involved and many if not most are Zionist or involved with Israel but there isn’t some single authority like the Catholic Church that you can target.
ape attack survivor@pissvortex

There is an effort by Israel to make Judaism synonymous with the zionist settler project but Judaism as a religious institution is also completely complicit in this process. No reason why they should get a pass when you (rightfully) wouldn’t extend that same grace to Catholicism

@Draren_Thiralas Yes, of course it's possible for a mind capable of rationality to act on mere inclination. This is called "being irrational", or—if you end up following a rule you could never in principle endorse, like "cause others needless suffering because pleasure is nice"—"being immoral"

@InVitroFuture Your rational mind isn't restricted to only objective, logically sound reasoning. Any thought that you can consciously articulate resides in your rational mind, even if it's not strictly "rational". I object to being killed on the grounds that I can articulate this thought.

@Draren_Thiralas If you act merely based on the fact that you happen to subjectively like or dislike something, you aren't being rational at all. You have no moral grounds to object if someone happens to like robbing or killing you, and can't claim to be a higher kind of animal than a pig

@InVitroFuture That's a non sequitur. It's enough that I happen to subjectively dislike these feelings. You don't need to declare "all sexual contact is bad" as a universal law to know that rape is wrong.

@Draren_Thiralas at minimum, the specific kind of terror and pain that you, a mammal, feel when a knife enters your kind of neck and starts cutting into your kind of craniofacial nerves and severing your kind of jugular vein. And pigs, as it happens, have all of those

@Draren_Thiralas Very good! So, in order for it to be rational for your mind to be influenced by those feelings in the first place, it turns out you have to choose to will it as a universal law that terror and pain are pro tanto reasons to avoid sticking knives into necks

@Draren_Thiralas This is not true of a cob of corn. If you think others should respect these feelings of terror and desire for self-preservation in you, you should respect them in pigs. Since corn does not show these behaviors or share this anatomy, you're not analogously bound to avoid BBQing it

@Draren_Thiralas If you try to restrain a pig and cut her throat open with a sharp implement, she will scream and struggle to get away the same way a dog or toddler or you or I would. The functional neuroanatomy each animal would use in the process is directly homologous

@Draren_Thiralas Oh cool! Would you mind explaining what this well-known difference is and why it justifies killing and eating livestock but not humans? Bonus points if you can explain why Bryan Edwards didn't know about it

@InVitroFuture That's not how communication works. Every tweet doesn't need several tomes of definitions attached. Most normal people already know there's a difference between people and livestock, and it's okay to simply refer to widely known facts like that without spelling them out.

@InVitroFuture Do you also ask a cob of corn if it wants to be BBQd? If not, then you also fundamentally agree that subhuman perspectives don't matter, you just draw the line slightly differently on where the category of "subhuman" lies.

@CPIM_Lamarck Generally agree tbh. But hard to resist when someone's entire ideology is ⛓️‍💥 zero compromise with the self-serving epistemic constructs of the oppressor, and then they turn around and use the exact vacuous thought-terminating cliché used in their paradigm example of oppression

@Draren_Thiralas The point is that if there's a morally relevant difference, you should be able to point to it and explain why it's relevant. Labeling someone "livestock" and saying exploitation is their "natural purpose" is zero ethical justification, as someone like BRG should know very well

@Draren_Thiralas For sure—plants don't have the hardware we share with other mammals for experiencing things at good or bad, and pigs unlike enslaved humans rarely seem to reflect on why they have the goals they do. //

@CPIM_Lamarck @Etanarachel More recently the point I've wanted to make is that it was always obvious this genocide was going to cause a massive morally righteous backlash, and the US Jewish community has been shooting itself in the foot by trying to cancel the universalist leftist version of the backlash
