Tax lien investing predates the stock market. For two centuries, counties have used this mechanism to keep budgets funded without immediately displacing homeowners. Institutions figured out how to scale it. Retail investors never got a fair entry point. That gap is closing.

In 99% of cases: the property owner repays the lien. They keep their home. The investor earns their return. The county was made whole months earlier. This is the designed outcome and the most common one. Tax liens exist to keep families in homes, not to displace them.

Some states legally mandate the maximum yield tax lien investors earn: • Arizona: up to 16% • Florida: up to 18% • Illinois: up to 18% • Iowa: up to 24% • New Jersey: up to 18% Fixed by statute. Not tied to the Fed. When rates drop, your lien return stays the same.

When someone can't pay property taxes, two paths exist. Option A: County immediately seizes the property. Option B: An investor steps in, pays the bill, gives the owner time to repay. Tax liens exist because Option B is better for everyone.

What is a tax lien? A tax lien is a legal claim the government places on a property when the owner stops paying property taxes. The county sells that claim to investors. The investor earns interest. The homeowner keeps their house if they pay up. Simple. Legal. 200 years old.
