@lynnmsully @noanonymouse @BostonDotCom It’s not semantics. Even the link you provided from the MIT Living Wage calculator shows them as totally different numbers, with the poverty rate at $6.53/hr in Middlesex Co.
It’s misleading to say Paras are earning poverty rates. Starting rate is well above that, even Woburn.

@WesterosGenZ @noanonymouse @BostonDotCom However, with due respect, I believe that working closely with the most needy students in districts should be enough to justify being paid a livable wage. The job has changed drastically but the pay has not.
English

@lynnmsully @noanonymouse @BostonDotCom I agree. But with due respect, to earn more pay Paras should be trained in special education techniques that best assist these students.
Instead, the job requirement for Paras is just a high school diploma. That’s not good enough for our kids OR to justify the raises Paras want
English

@WesterosGenZ @noanonymouse @BostonDotCom Also, you’re saying they should have higher education- if that’s the case (and it IS in many instances) they should earn more money
English

@WesterosGenZ @noanonymouse @BostonDotCom Paras need an associate degree or need to pass the Para pro test to be hired in most districts. Once hired, they have professional development many times throughout the year. Also - many paras I know have a bachelors degree and still do not make enough money to pay their bills
English

@WesterosGenZ @noanonymouse @BostonDotCom Paras work closely with the most needy students - they should earn enough money for their hard work and dedication to be able to make a living. Nobody works as a para to get rich - but to be able to pay your bills would be nice!
English

@lynnmsully @noanonymouse @BostonDotCom Maybe that’s what is meant, but that is not what is being said. The living wage and the poverty level are two different metrics.

Maybe they are going by this - along with a little common sense. If you’re earning $22K per year, and you’re paying $1,500.00/month for rent or mortgage, how can you afford your other bills?? The answer…… you can’t!
English

@noanonymouse @BostonDotCom So when you said Paras are making below the poverty level, you didn’t actually mean the well-recognized poverty level. You meant some unquantified mystery number that comes from your personal lived experience? That’s helpful. Got it.
English

@WesterosGenZ @kelleratlarge Or they could approach bargaining as just that - listening to the concerns of the teachers who are the ones working with the students daily, and who best know the needs of the students and staff they work with, rather than come to the table with nothing but no’s and delay tactics
English

@lynnmsully @kelleratlarge Or teacher unions that bring high-paid, out-of-town MTA representatives in to negotiations, to push the same state platform talking points no matter the district needs, district priorities, or district finances.
English

@lynnmsully You mean how does Governor Healey feel about the Haverhill schools hiring the same lawyer now used by Mayor Wu and formerly by Mayor Menino? It would be a question to ask her.
Haverhill, MA 🇺🇸 English

@noanonymouse @kelleratlarge It’s reprehensible that paras roles in public education have changed drastically, yet their pay has not!! Nobody should work that hard yet have to depend on state aid or a second job to be able to pay their bills!
