The original photo was taken around 2005. That day, my grandfather planted an olive tree on our land and told me, “This tree is a memory from me… take good care of it.” I promised him I would. About a year later, my grandfather passed away. When I grew up and got married, I built my home on that land. The engineer told me it would be better to remove the tree to make the house look nicer, because the planned location of the house was exactly where the tree stood. But I refused completely and said, “This is a memory from my grandfather… I promised him I would take care of it.” After I built my home, I hung that photo in the living room, so I would remember every day to water the tree and look after it. It was more than just a tree to me… it was a promise and a memory. But in the Gaza war, my home was destroyed, my land was leveled, and the tree disappeared… no trace of it remains. Even the photo stayed beneath the rubble of my house. Forgive me, my grandfather… This was beyond my control. I promised you I would protect that tree… and I couldn’t. Peace to your pure soul...
