An Ohio grandmother lost her life after she dashed into the path of an out of control car and threw her grandson to safety... sacrificing herself in the process.
52-year-old Laura Hammond tragically lost her life on February 27th when she saw death coming for her young grandson and heroically took the hit for him as she threw him to safety.
The dramatic incident played out like something out of Hollywood. According to reports, Laura Hammond was outside of her mother's Circleville, Ohio, home when she noticed an out of control car barreling her way.
Laura's mother, Judy Justice, described the life altering next few seconds, "She must have heard that car coming".
Her mother continued, "She didn't even have the time to pick him up. She just slung him out of the way before the car pinned her against our daughter's car."
Authorities in Circleville report they received the 911 call regarding a crash around 10 a.m. Deputies arrived on the scene to discover a 2025 Nissan Sentra crashed into a tree, and Laura lying on the ground, suffering from serious injuries that would ultimately take her life.
Authorities report the driver of the Nissan, 60-year-old John Hill, claims he became "distracted by his cellphone," causing him to lose control of his vehicle. After leaving the roadway, Hill traveled through two yards before entering the driveway where Laura's grandson was playing.
As the Nissan closed in on the young boy, Laura jumped into action. She rushed to the young boy, and according to Sheriff John Strawser, "Laura actually picked up the child and tossed him (to safety)."
An instant later, the Nissan struck Laura and also struck a parked Chevrolet Equinox before striking a tree. This caused the Equinox to spin around and pin Laura between the two vehicles.
Laura was freed from between the vehicles, and family members began life-saving measures. EMS arrived, and Laura was rushed to Ohio Health Grant Medical Center, where she succumbed to her injuries.
The young grandson as well as the driver, John Hill, were both taken to Ohio Health Berger Hospital for treatment of minor injuries.
There have been no charges filed in the incident. However, the incident is under investigation, and the sheriff’s office says a vehicular homicide charge is expected.
Additional charges could follow depending on the results of a pending blood test to determine if alcohol or drugs were a factor.
Our thoughts are with the family of Laura Hammond. She is an absolute hero and an example of the selfless love of a grandparent.
