Comedy of MCAs benchmarking trip to Geneva that missed the bench Today I want to share an encounter ten years ago, I was at Geneva Airport waiting to board a flight to Schiphol airport in Amsterdam. The check-in queue was long, but we had time nobody was worried. Europeans queue like they are attending a funeral procession, quiet, disciplined and emotionally unavailable. Africans, on the other hand, queue like people attending a wedding. Noise, laughter and excitement. A group of about eight Africans stood few feet ahead of me. They were happy, loud and animated in their talk. Every one of them dragging two giant suitcases. Their voices echoed across the airport terminal like political campaign speakers. I heard them speak Kiswahili. I moved closer and greeted them warmly. “Hambojambo wakenya wenzangu!” They all turned smiling “Hatujambo!” they answered almost in chorus. Immediately we became relatives. That is the African way. Abroad, meeting another Kenyan automatically upgrades you from stranger to cousin. We began chatting. Who are you? Which county? What brought you to Switzerland? They were MCAs from Kabarnet on a benchmarking trip. Yes benchmarking, the most misused English word ever introduced into Kenyan politics after devolution. The moment a county government says “benchmarking,” just know taxpayers are about to finance tourism disguised as development. Now, let me tell you something about Geneva. That city is expensive enough to make your bank account develop chest pains. Even breathing there feels taxable. A cup of coffee can cost the same as a goat in Isiolo. Yet here were our honourable leaders roaming the city carrying suitcases full of shoppings back home. Curious, I asked them what exactly they had learnt from Switzerland. One MCA smiled and said: “This city is very clean.” Another added: “And the roads are beautiful.” A lady among them nodded "and the trains keep time.” No policy insights. No governance lessons. No urban planning discussions. Just roads, cleanliness and trains behaving responsibly. At that point, I knew Baringo taxpayers were sponsoring very expensive sightseeing. But wait the real drama had not even started. The group finally reached the check-in counter. One by one they proudly handed over their tickets to the young Swiss lady behind the desk. She clicked on her computer. Paused. Looked again. Then calmly delivered the kind of sentence capable of collapsing governments. “Sorry, your plane left last night.” Silence. The MCAs stared at her. She stared back. The airport itself seemed to pause and wait. Then confusion exploded. “What do you mean the plane left?” shouted one man. “How can a plane leave without us passengers?” screamed another. A lady shouted “Surely! You are joking!” The Swiss lady remained calm. I suspect they are trained for handling such emotional outbursts. “Yes it departed yesterday evening,” she repeated politely. The honourable members could not accept it. To them, this is deliberate betrayal. They protested loud enough to cause commotion. I wanted to explain that planes operate on time, not on respect for leadership titles. Back home, meetings, weddings, fundraisers wait for politicians. Even funerals delay burial until Mheshimiwa arrives. But airplanes do not care whether you are MCA, governor, senator or village elder. When boarding closes, khalas. The queue behind us watched the unfolding drama with sympathy and mild entertainment. Airport security soon arrived and gently pushed the delegation aside before they could declare war on Swiss airport. I left my line and joined them and advised: “My brothers and sisters, quickly buy another ticket. Maybe you can still catch your Nairobi connection in Amsterdam.” Then I added what was already boiling inside me: “Besides, this entire trip was unnecessary. Please buy the tickets using our money again and stop embarrassing Kenya in foreign capitals.” They looked at me badly. But deep inside, they knew I was right.

The Presidency offers bursaries. The Ministry of Education offers bursaries. HELB offers bursaries. Governors offer bursaries. Senators offer bursaries. Women Reps. offer bursaries. MPs offer bursaries. MCAs offer bursaries. It is not that they love education and empowering generations; It's because bursaries are a huge channel of looting public money. -ghost learners -ghost schools -ghost school projects -chipping MoE capitation -inflated costs -ghost education events No one questions the number of beneficiaries. No one questions the financial background of applicants. No one questions conflict of interest. No one questions the amount allocated. No one follows up to see if indeed it was implemented. Does it mean we can't have one central body responsible for bursaries? WIZI WIZI bila KAZI.

For those who have been self defeating themselves eti we need a united opposition, NO! You only need to wake up and vote for those who fight and serve the country like #OkiyaThe6th . In 2022, there was allegedly, a "2-horse race" so, USIDANGANYWE #REKE
Okiya Omtatah Okoiti@OkiyaOmtatah

Harry Truman once said: “The only thing new in the world is the history you do not know.” Fellow Kenyans, our crisis did not begin yesterday. The looting. The illegal debt. The betrayal of the Constitution. The collapse of public services. The silence of career politicians. These are old scripts repeated by leaders who believe Kenyans forget quickly. They believe another scandal will trend. Another distraction will come. Another funeral, another handshake, another coalition, another slogan. Meanwhile, you pay more taxes for debts you never approved and never benefited from. Between 2014 and 2024, Kenya borrowed Sh9.11 trillion. Only Sh2.57 trillion received proper parliamentary approval. The remaining Sh6.54 trillion is odious debt, unconstitutional borrowing forced onto the backs of struggling citizens. This is why food prices rise while wages stagnate. This is why hospitals lack medicine while billions disappear. This is why schools decline while politicians grow richer. This is why young people graduate into hopelessness. And while Kenya bleeds, legacy politicians remain silent. Many are not fighting to fix the system. They are fighting to inherit it. They criminalize protesters. They weaponize police. They reward political loyalists with advisory jobs funded by taxpayers. They protect corruption networks while ordinary Kenyans suffer. We go to court because the Constitution is the last line of defense between the people and organized state plunder. From the struggle for independence in 1963, to Saba Saba, to the 2010 Constitution, every generation of Kenyans has been called to defend freedom against greed and impunity. History is watching us now. If we remain silent while our country is looted, future generations will remember us as the people who watched Kenya collapse and did nothing. Read history. Defend the Constitution. Reject fear. Reject silence. Reject thieves disguised as leaders. We must be a nation that reads, remembers, and refuses to be misled by the same old tricks. Know your history, defend your rights, and let us not be "newly" surprised by what we should have already learned. Kenya istahili heshima #OdiousDebt #ReKe #Constitutionalism

Despite having never worked anywhere, innovated or invented anything, the Kenyatta family is worth more than KES 15 trillion. All their money and properties have been stolen from Kenyans by jomo Kenyatta, ngina Kenyatta, uhuru Kenyatta, muhoho Kenyatta and other family members. Any arrangement for 2027 presidential election that does not have David Maraga as the Presidential Flag bearer and Edwin Sifuna as the Deputy with the endorsement of Okiya Omtatah will not beat Kasongo. You better listen this time around because you never listen. Maraga is meant to complete the 5 years that were meant for Kasongo's second term as a transitional leader as Edwin Sifuna and Okiya Omtatah build up towards 2032. But as always, you often think I am delusional.

Vegetables getting expensive during the rainy season, shocking, right? That’s what happens when all the focus is on smooth city roads while rural ones turn into mud. Farms are producing, but nothing can move. But sure, let’s keep acting surprised when prices rise. 🙃
