Do you know that The ocean produces more than half of the oxygen you breathe, and most people don’t even realize it. When we think of oxygen, we usually picture forests, trees, and green landscapes; but the real powerhouse lies beneath the surface of the sea. Tiny, microscopic organisms called phytoplankton drift through the upper layers of the ocean, and through photosynthesis, they convert sunlight, carbon dioxide, and nutrients into energy; releasing oxygen as a by-product. Despite being invisible to the naked eye, these organisms are responsible for an estimated 50–70% of the Earth’s oxygen production.
