If the UK joined the US as the 51st state. We would be the poorest state in the entire union. Mississippi which is portrayed at swamp dwelling hillbillies in majority of international media is above us. I don’t think people grasp how far we’ve fallen in real terms when it comes to GDP per capita. We’ve seen no growth for almost an entire generations. We’ve seen our productivity decrease and our tax increases. The average person on the UK, on £50,000 is less well off than your average Mississippi swamp dweller.

This really hit home for me when I went on my honeymoon.
I was blessed to be able to go on a cruise from Sydney, around areas like Fiji and Bora Bora for 3 weeks.
The individuals from the UK we spoke too (which was many) were all company owners, ex bankers or like us honeymooners.
Those individuals form the US.
Nurses; Teachers etc.
One guy owned just two Taco Trucks in Chicago.
Our purchasing power compared to the dollar does matter.
It’s a reason why the average US citizen is able to afford a luxury like this cruise and why it’s reversed only for the top in the UK.

@DominicMcGregor You’re way oversimplifying one metric. look at the quality of life metrics - they’re all higher in the UK. We’d be #1 in QOL on average. The reason the US is so high is due to their 1%. Look at the median wage adjusted for purchasing power parity. US is abysmal.

@DominicMcGregor My understanding is that American wages tend to be higher but disposable income is fairly comparable due to things like insurance being much more expensive in the US.
American homes are definitely larger than most in the UK, which could be used as a living standards metric.
