@honam @Rhodes_Kropf from MIT is one of the co-authors - he does great work on bringing data driven analyses to what is a very opaque industry. In addition to being a practitioner and running a venture fund himself.

This is a great topic and conclusions from the HBS research on VC decision making is not surprising. Every successful early stage VC firm I know has earned enough wisdom to use the champion driven model (even if not a solo GP, a strong individual in a good partnership can somehow get deals done). Where many of the same great early stage VCs struggle is in adapting their voting system (or lack thereof), at the later stages to enable the entire partnership to weigh in, share credit and allocate bigger dollars to a handful of their best companies. In such situations, the original deal champion may no longer be in charge of important decisions. Culturally, this is extremely difficult to pull off and often leads to sub-optimal capital allocation decisions. Rather than taking a first principals approach to investing at every stage, I see many people look to follow simple rules (and turn off their brains).
