A three-year-old girl successfully underwent a rare thoracoscopic resection of ganglioneuroma at AIIMS Patna, becoming the first case at the institute where the tumor was completely removed using only three small 5-mm incisions. Ganglioneuroma is an uncommon tumor arising from nerve tissue, and such chest tumors are traditionally treated through open thoracotomy, which carries significant postoperative pain and morbidity.
The five-hour minimally invasive procedure avoided the need for a large chest incision and rib spreading, thereby reducing surgical trauma and promoting faster recovery.
The surgery was performed by a team of Paediatric Surgeons from the Dept. of #Paediatric #Surgery, including Dr. Amit Kumar Sinha, Additional Professor & HOD; Dr. Amit Kumar, Associate Professor; Dr. Rashi, Associate Professor; Dr. Digamber Chaubey, Associate Professor; Dr. Gaurav Shandilya, Assistant Professor; and Dr. Saurav, Assistant Professor. The Pediatric Anaesthesia team was led by Prof. (Dr.) Chandni Sinha, who administered single-lung ventilation using an advanced bronchial blocker technique.
The child was extubated immediately after surgery and discharged in a stable condition.
Congratulating the team, Prof. (Brig.) Dr. Raju Agarwal, Executive Director & CEO, AIIMS Patna, appreciated the successful management of such rare and critical surgery with proper monitoring and care, highlighting the institute’s commitment to advanced, safe, and patient-friendly healthcare.
