Manchester United didn't sign the wrong player. They created the wrong environment for the player they signed. Manuel Ugarte arrived as one of Europe's most aggressive ball-winning midfielders. At Sporting CP and Paris Saint-Germain, his job was simple: recover possession, break up attacks, cover space, and allow more creative players to dictate the game. Yet at United, he has often been asked to do the opposite. The problem is that Ugarte is not a deep-lying playmaker. He isn't Rodri. He isn't Toni Kroos. He won't complete 100 passes or control the rhythm of every match. That was never the player United paid over £40 million for. This has become a familiar story at Old Trafford. The club repeatedly buys specialists and then asks them to become something else. Donny van de Beek was not a holding midfielder. Fred was not a tempo-setter. Schneiderlin was not a creative passer. Now Ugarte faces the same problem.
