It is interesting how these techniques can take hardware into account: optimizations for locally attached NVMe, dealing with network jitter with iSCSI or EBS, etc…

Any meta/survey treatments of group commit techniques that show trade offs of various approaches? I have implemented an initial version of Kudu’s WAL group commit a decade ago and still use that code as a reference for coding, designing, or reviewing similar implementations.

While his theoretical linguistic work (Chomsky hierarchy) has been quite useful in the fields of programming languages and compilers, it should be noted that when it comes to computational natural language processing it is seen by many as sending the field on a wild goose chase. There seems to be some commonality with his political work: grand theorizing, discarding or omitting evidence to the contrary.

Chomsky is a genius of titanic proportions, which even someone of a conservative inclination should be able to recognize, unless you're a stubborn little dummy. There are some people whose raw brain power you just have to appreciate, if you're at all interested in human knowledge

I have no desire to watch yet another “sturgeon with horseradish” Russian liberal yap for 2.5 hours, but I am guessing none of that is mentioned there.

That’s not surprising: 🇷🇺‘opposition’ hates to mention the 1st Chechen war, bc it spoils their narrative about horrible Putin who ruined a mostly nice country. But 🇷🇺 conscripts tortured, raped and mass-murdered Chechens long before Putin, just like they do now in 🇺🇦.

@jondot @mikedavidson613 I think a lot about the time that a buddy of mine had a bug in some Java code where they did `if (collection.len() > 0) { item = collection.pop() }` and it broke because the collection changed size in between My brain broke cause I'm so used to that being compile-checked
