The scene where prim and bambi break up because prim almost misses bambi’s birthday really got me thinking. bambi comes from a broken home. Her mother is emotionally absent, and we can see that in how she reacts to bambi’s problems. To her, her daughter just has fun, drinks, and lacks the maturity to face life. She’s unable to see that her daughter is struggling, and instead of asking why bambi behaves the way she does, it’s easier for her to label her as the problem.
Her mother even tells prim that she would be better off without bambi, that bambi could ruin her life. And if we go back to the birthday scene, we see that her mother isn’t the only one who sees bambi as a burden, bambi herself does too. She believes she might hold prim back or ruin her career with her needs.
Bambi is very aware that she needs attention, that in a relationship she needs to be a priority. It may sound selfish, but it actually makes sense considering how her mother shaped the way she relates to others. Psychology shows that daughters of emotionally absent mothers often try to fill those gaps in their relationships. We also see this when bambi struggles to handle painful emotional conversations, she knows she could become an obstacle to prim achieving her dreams.
Prim is the pillar of her family. She didn’t grow up privileged like bambi, she has to work hard and push herself twice as much. That naturally means bambi can’t always be her immediate priority.
With both of them having different priorities, and in what I think bambi see as an act of love, bambi decides to walk away from prim. Staying together long term might have eventually destroyed the love they had for each other. Bambi already resents her mother for making her feel like an abandoned child, so it makes sense that she wouldn’t want to recreate that dynamic with her girlfriend. Abandonment issues are very strong here too distancing yourself from the person you love most out of fear of being replaced or abandoned is a very common coping mechanism.
“It’s never gonna work between us.” It could also explain why Bambi looked for a rebound in zee after prim. We don’t know everything about that relationship yet, but it does feel like she was trying to fill the void without really moving on, which can easily turn into something unhealthy.
P.S. bambi chose to end a 4 year relationship with her girlfriend before going after a new girl, it doesn’t sound like someone who would cheat.
