Florida Grandma Drove the Same Car for 53 Years, Then the Odometer Hit 567,000 Miles Rachel Veitch’s life story can not be told without mentioning her car. For more than five decades, the Orlando grandmother shared her life with a single vehicle: a 1964 Mercury Comet Caliente she lovingly named “La Chariot.” By the time she finally stopped driving, the odometer read an astonishing 567,000 miles more than the distance from Earth to the moon and back. Veitch bought the car new in February 1964 from a dealership in Sanford, Florida, paying $3,289. At the time, gasoline cost 39 cents a gallon, Lyndon B. Johnson was president, and “The Little Old Lady from Pasadena” played on the radio. She was a young nurse, a mother of four, and had no idea that the car would outlast nearly everything else in her life. Over the years, La Chariot survived three marriages, eight mufflers, at least 17 batteries, multiple sets of shocks, and countless oil changes. Veitch often joked that the car had proven far more dependable than her husband's. “My Chariot has never lied to me or cheated on me,” she once said. “I can always depend on her.” After divorcing her third husband in 1975, he took their 1972 Pontiac. Veitch kept the Mercury. “I’ll bet he’s traded cars half a dozen times by now,” she added, “and I still have my Chariot, my faithful pal.” The Mercury wasn’t pampered as a museum piece. It was driven constantly. Despite its “lousy” 15 miles per gallon, automatic transmission, and frosty air conditioning, the car carried Veitch across the country, including a long road trip to Pennsylvania in 2007 for her 70th high school reunion. It also appeared at numerous car shows and became a familiar sight among antique car clubs. In 2002, the car underwent a renovation shortly after Veitch received a speeding ticket for driving 92 mph in a 55-mph zone. Her secret to longevity was simple and obsessive care. Veitch meticulously logged every fill-up, recording mileage, dates, and fuel economy. “I’ve never been a destructive person,” she said. “I’ve taken care of everything except my husband.” So closely was she associated with La Chariot that friends and neighbours eventually grew tired of hearing the story. “People don’t want to talk to me anymore,” Veitch joked. “They’re tired of hearing about my Chariot.” Veitch remained active in the National Association of Antique Automobile Clubs and proudly represented her Mercury Comet Caliente wherever she went. Eventually, age-related issues forced her to stop driving. And finally, Rachel Veitch herself reached the end of the road. She passed away on May 11, 2017, in Orlando, Florida, at the age of 98. A widely shared video of her and La Chariot was recorded a few years earlier, when the odometer read “only” 540,000 miles. For Rachel Veitch, the car was never just transportation. It was a witness to a lifetime, a constant companion that stayed faithful long after everything else had changed.

@lifesfare @BoggyManSann @Mileage_impo theres nothing offensive abt this, its asking something valid. its rather hypocritical for you to ask someone to "let you know" either lol the car was donated to a museum shortly before she passed as she didnt want to sell privately. its displayed in the wisconsin auto museum

@Carsofglasgow1 @2Hugh2Mungus @Thecarhoarder I really want to love this car but volvo dropped the ball on this one, its a weird lifted sedan and it just looks way too tall from the side profile. dunno what happened when designing this car but in my opinion its incomparable to the beauty of the s90. proportions are way off

@CreamyTigers @Spottyroo they still have full sized spares, these squared off ones are electric variants of the g wagon. they have a charger there instead where the wheel would be on the ICE variants, hence why it's smaller in size. i think its pretty neat coming from a design perspective
