He knew the families Chavez was supposedly fighting for — Italian immigrants, Serbian immigrants, people who came from the Depression with nothing and built something with their hands. He picked grapes himself. He knew what the union actually was. So on his first day of college at UC Santa Cruz in the early 1970s, when wealthy Los Angeles students demanded to know if his grapes were union, he had a simple answer: 𝘐 𝘱𝘪𝘤𝘬𝘦𝘥 𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘮. 𝘐 𝘰𝘸𝘯 𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘮. The response: 𝘞𝘦𝘭𝘭, 𝘺𝘰𝘶'𝘳𝘦 𝘱𝘢𝘳𝘵 𝘰𝘧 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘱𝘳𝘰𝘣𝘭𝘦𝘮. 𝘠𝘰𝘶'𝘳𝘦 𝘰𝘯𝘦 𝘰𝘧 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘨𝘳𝘰𝘸𝘦𝘳 𝘪𝘯𝘴𝘦𝘤𝘵𝘴. These were students who had never picked grapes. Never set foot in a vineyard. Never met a farm worker. And they were absolutely certain they were on the right side of history. VDH knew better. He knew that Chavez sabotaged driveways with nails, that his people used force when swarming fields, that he sent thugs to the border to stop illegal immigrants from crossing because they undercut union wages. He was associated with Synanon — a violent cult that used psychological torture as a management tool. He fired loyal white socialist volunteers as disloyal and retreated to his compound. People in the farming communities knew things were wrong. They talked about it. Nobody outside listened. And then the full truth started coming out. Dolores Huerta — 95 years old, Chavez's closest co-founder — revealed that he fathered two of her children. That he raped her violently in a grape field. That he coerced her in a hotel room. That he sexually groomed the preteen daughters of his own advisors, girls aged 8 and 12. Serial adultery on top of all of it. Why did no one speak? The answer Huerta herself gave: 𝘐 𝘩𝘢𝘥 𝘵𝘰 𝘴𝘢𝘷𝘦 𝘓𝘢 𝘊𝘢𝘶𝘴𝘢. The cause mattered more than the children he groomed. The movement mattered more than the women he assaulted. The icon mattered more than the truth. California has a state holiday named for this man. Hundreds of streets and buildings bear his name. They're now quietly covering his statues with tarps. 𝗧𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗶𝘀 𝘄𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗵𝗮𝗽𝗽𝗲𝗻𝘀 𝘄𝗵𝗲𝗻 𝗮 𝗺𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗱𝗲𝗰𝗶𝗱𝗲𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗶𝗰𝗼𝗻 𝗺𝗮𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗽𝗲𝗼𝗽𝗹𝗲 𝗵𝗲 𝗵𝘂𝗿𝘁.

“Nothing brings out the inner Klansman of a white liberal faster than a Black person who refuses to obey.” White liberals are calling Black conservatives traitors. Sellouts. The N word. Because in their framework, Blackness comes with mandatory politics attached. White liberals fund the social justice movements. Tell Black women their men are dangerous. Push abortion as the number one civil rights issue of the day — then go home to their husbands and children. The same life they’re telling Black women they shouldn’t want. Black people are hip to the scam now. “You’re not going to be able to shame Black people into compliance. You’re not going to be able to disrespect them to the point where they’re so hurt by your lack of approval that they’re going to start advocating for their own replacement.” The hard bigotry of low expectations kept Black communities stagnant for decades. It’s how they control.
