Modern AI data centers do not simply “consume water once.” Many newer facilities from 2024–2026 use closed-loop cooling, reclaimed wastewater, hybrid systems, or even near-zero-water cooling designs. A large amount of cooling water is reused and circulated repeatedly rather than constantly replaced with fresh drinking water. The real environmental question is how much freshwater must be added over time, what type of cooling system is used, and whether the facility is located in a water-stressed region. A modern AI data center in a cool climate using recycled or non-potable water is very different from older evaporative systems or facilities built in drought-prone areas.
