The Neo Geo was a truly special system. It was marketed with the catchphrase that you could enjoy the arcade (MVS) 100% at home on the console (AES), and it really was almost identical. On the flip side, that also meant the home console was priced almost like arcade hardware, boasting both incredible performance and a hefty price tag. The Neo Geo was so powerful that, despite being released in 1990, it far surpassed systems that came later, like the Super Famicom, PlayStation, Sega Saturn, and Nintendo 64. It wasn’t until the era of the PlayStation 2 and Dreamcast that truly accurate ports became possible. Because of that, it’s still extremely popular among retro gamers even today.

April cherry blossoms and CPS3 progress🌸 STREET FIGHTER III is just around the corner!

This is a title I have been working on for the #Analogue Pocket - ESP. Ra. De. I got this board originally long ago in a bulk auction (not eBay) from a guy in the UAE. I think he was a prince or a sultan, or something like that. He had a huge arcade collection of PCBs he was selling, and I bought some of them in a bulk auction from him. I got a few boards from him, NBA Jam TE, Gunbird 1&2, and a couple more for cheap. There was a core released some years ago, actually one of the first #MiSTer cores from Josh, who we talked to back then quite frequently and are friendly with. I have worked with a lot of Josh's Chisel-based stuff, notably the YMZ280B which appeared in Battle Bakraid, and last year, I rewrote a lot of the Cave68k core he made in native verilog, however we did not release all of them (youtu.be/Ra3qxbJYgmc). The past few weeks, I rewrote and designed the final part - the graphics pipeline/ engine. The reason for this is because the final few games, as I explain in the video above, have some problems. The original design Josh made had a frame buffer for sprites, and so sprites were a frame behind everything else in the system. This caused problems with Metamoqester, and also many unnoticable problems in several other games, so we did not release everything, just the ones that were the highest quality according to our testing. This core is probably one of the hardest cores that I have worked on. First of all, the design goal was to get rid of the frame buffer. The original board does not have a frame buffer, so to resolve other downstream issues, everything has to be rendered live, scanline, with zooming effects and such applied. Of course, still some optimization to go to reach the performance targets of the board, as you can see in the below video there are some unwarranted slowdowns that happen in the game. I will get those resolved in time, but it is a pretty good start. The core uses up about as much resource as Midway, so I am running into resource limits too, which makes it even more challenging. #CoinOpCollection #Cave68k #Esprade

Let me introduce Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (arcade game), a game I had an absolute blast playing in arcades when I was a kid. Back then, Konami was making a lot of belt-scrolling action games using various IPs, and this title was a huge hit. It was also ported to the Nintendo Entertainment System, and the arcade feel was recreated surprisingly well, which made it very popular. Even today, it’s still incredibly fun to play 👌
