A teacher, Jamie Varley, has been found guilty of murdering and sexually abusing his 13month old adopted son, Preston Davey, in July 2023. Preston was adopted in April 2023 and, over the following months, suffered repeated abuse and multiple injuries before dying at home in Blackpool. Varley claimed he had drowned in the bath, but a post-mortem ruled out drowning and found he died from airway obstruction caused by objects placed in his mouth. Varley was convicted of murder and multiple counts of child abuse, while his partner, John McGowan-Fazakerley, was found guilty of child cruelty, sexual assault, and allowing the child’s death. Both men are due to be sentenced on Thursday.
