Muslim maritime dominance of the Mediterranean at its peak in the 9th century. The Muslim powers were gradually deprived of bases by the Byzantine resurgence in Italy and the eastern islands (most notably Crete in 961), then suffered the critical loss of Sicily to the Normans in the 11th century. Restoration of Christian naval dominance in the middle and eastern sea in turn made the crusader states of the Levant viable.

Infrastructure costs have really gotten out of hand. In 1963, you could build Suez Canal 2 for 5 billion dollars (2021) money. Today, that wouldn't even get you past the environmental impact statement.
