This is probably one of my favourite reads of 2025. Focusing mostly from 1850 onwards it tells the darker side of an empire which preached 'civilized' rule, but could only keep together via enormous amounts of violence. V much recommend

So, as a doctor I can’t accept a plastic pen from a pharmaceutical company because it might influence my prescribing decisions, but MPs can accept thousands in cash from those who want to privatise the NHS and it won’t affect their decision-making??? CTFO

🚨 Melania Trump this morning: Proposes an AI system—“Plato”—as a replacement for teachers. “Literature, art, science, mathematics, history… the entire corpus of knowledge… at home.” Replace teachers? With a machine? AI over teachers. That’s the idea. Instead of calling for better pay for our nation's educators/heroes. Sad day!

If you’ve never read any Mishima but want to take the plunge, I would recommend starting with The Sailor Who Fell from Grace with the Sea (1963). It’s quite short but contains all the great themes of sensuality, obsession, beauty and death which characterize his finest work.

The memoirs of a lazy, sarcastic cat: Sōseki is simply outstanding. (And, for my money, this is still the best translation. The language in the new one is a little too, well, *contemporary* I fear — the dialogue especially sounds like EastEnders or a Guy Ritchie movie at times.)
