I’m here at the LA County Civilian Oversight Commission where the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department is openly defying a subpoena issued by the commission. Sheriff Robert Luna says the department has “nothing to hide”, but was instructed by county counsel to not send anyone.

Sorry but LASD absolutely cannot be trusted to investigate themselves. The new deputy gang policy is unclear about their obligation to comply with investigations from the Civilian Oversight Commission. Sheriff Luna’s #2, April Tardy, is a tattoo’d deputy gang member herself.

And the challenge now will be ensuring real enforcement and compliance with this policy, and LASD fully and proactively investigating and eradicating deputy gangs.

It is not clear whether LASD has to cooperate with the Civilians Oversight Commission’s own investigations into deputy gangs. The fact that the Office of Inspector General and the Civilian Oversight Commission were shut out of this process is deeply problematic.

This new LASD policy on deputy gangs should have been adopted long ago, instead of LASD spending years violating CA law. As it’s written, it is unclear whether LASD will take any proactive steps to uproot deputy gangs within the department. #LASDgangs  latimes.com/california/sto…

I’m here at the California Court of Appeal where the fate of the injunction blocking LA’s Inspector General’s investigation into deputy gangs will be decided. @ACLU_SoCal has filed an amicus brief opposing the lawsuit filed by the deputy’s union to stop OIG’s investigation.
