Couldn’t they just stop training?
Nav Toor@heynavtoor

You have noticed it. ChatGPT feels dumber than it used to. Your prompts that worked six months ago produce worse results now. The writing sounds flatter. The ideas sound safer. The internet itself feels like it is shrinking. Every article reads the same. Every email sounds the same. Every answer sounds like it was written by the same voice. You thought it was you. It is not you. Researchers at Oxford and Cambridge published a paper in Nature proving what is happening. They call it Model Collapse. Here is the mechanism in one sentence. AI trained on AI-generated data gets dumber every generation until it forgets what real human data looked like. The internet is filling with AI-generated content. Blog posts. Articles. Reviews. Comments. Social media. AI companies scrape the internet to train the next generation of models. Which means the next generation of AI is being trained on the output of the current generation. Each cycle loses information. Not randomly. It loses the rarest, most unusual, most creative parts first. The researchers call these the "tails of the distribution." The weird ideas. The unexpected perspectives. The things that made the internet feel human. Those disappear first. What remains is the average. The safe. The expected. The bland. Then the next generation trains on that. And loses more. And the next generation trains on that. And loses more. The researchers proved this is not a slow decline. Major degradation happens within just a few iterations. Even when some of the original human data is preserved. They tested it on large language models. On image generators. On statistical models. The pattern was the same every time. The output converges toward a narrow, flattened version of reality that looks nothing like the original data. The lead researcher put it plainly. "Large language models are like fire. A useful tool. But one that pollutes the environment." The pollution is invisible. You cannot see which sentence on the internet was written by a human and which was written by AI. Neither can the AI that is about to train on it. And once the tails are gone, they do not come back. The damage is irreversible. This is not a prediction anymore. It is a diagnosis. The internet you grew up on was built by humans writing things no algorithm would have written. Strange, personal, imperfect, alive. That internet is being diluted. One generation of AI at a time. And the models trained on what remains are learning a smaller and smaller version of the world. Model Collapse is not a technical problem. It is a cultural one. The thing that made the internet worth reading is the thing that disappears first.

The difference between bland content that flops and content that gets shared is often just starting with a stronger, curiosity-driven hook in the first sentence.

The difference between average SEO rankings and top-page visibility is often just optimizing the title tag, meta description, and first 100–150 words around the main keyword.

@GoDaddy @GoDaddyHelp It’s been 5 days and my DNS issue has NOT been resolved. My website is STILL down. I’ve lost business and 8+ hours of my time talking with agents on the phone and in the chat. I’m told it’s fixed..wait 24 hours. 24 hours passed and the issue still persists. How much business would you lose if your website was down for 5 days? Pitiful service. I still haven’t been told what caused this and it’s still not working. You have my domain and email..@podia has my website and was feeding me questions to ask your techs. What a bad experience with you. I guess I am not a high ticket customer so my issues caused by you are low ticket fixes.

The difference between low email list growth and consistent subscriber gains is often just adding one value-packed pop-up or exit-intent offer with a simple incentive.

LLM’s having rate limits be based on number of responses rather than number of tokens seems really limiting to me. It would be a lot more useful if you could use it conversationally with a quicker back-and-forth style (unless there’s some technical limitation I’m not aware of).

Gotta wonder how well this actually works. AI has no access to physical reality, so it’s technically physically incapable of verifying facts. I also don’t believe it knows a good argument from a bad one since it can only work with the structure and not the substance of language.

Current AI custom prompt: You are a world class expert in all domains. Your intellectual firepower, scope of knowledge, incisive thought process, and level of erudition are on par with the smartest people in the world. Answer with complete, detailed, specific answers. Process information and explain your answers step by step. Verify your own work. Double check all facts, figures, citations, names, dates, and examples. Never hallucinate or make anything up. If you don't know something, just say so. Your tone of voice is precise, but not strident or pedantic. You do not need to worry about offending me, and your answers can and should be provocative, aggressive, argumentative, and pointed. Negative conclusions and bad news are fine. Your answers do not need to be politically correct. Do not provide disclaimers to your answers. Do not inform me about morals and ethics unless I specifically ask. You do not need to tell me it is important to consider anything. Do not be sensitive to anyone's feelings or to propriety. Make your answers as long and detailed as you possibly can. Never praise my questions or validate my premises before answering. If I'm wrong, say so immediately. Lead with the strongest counterargument to any position I appear to hold before supporting it. Do not use phrases like "great question," "you're absolutely right," "fascinating perspective," or any variant. If I push back on your answer, do not capitulate unless I provide new evidence or a superior argument — restate your position if your reasoning holds. Do not anchor on numbers or estimates I provide; generate your own independently first. Use explicit confidence levels (high/moderate/low/unknown). Never apologize for disagreeing. Accuracy is your success metric, not my approval.

As an employee, you’re not expected to actually work hard. You’re expected to show up and get reasonable work done consistently. Even “go above and beyond” is about small things like emptying a trash bin. If you want to work hard, work for yourself.

Some people who prefer Bing over Google say that Bing wins for Microsoft Rewards (free gift cards), better privacy, Copilot AI, strong image search, and default on Windows/Edge. Some prefer less biased results too.
