Congratulations @MagyarPeterMP on your election victory. This is an historic moment, not only for Hungary, but for European democracy. I look forward to working with you for the security and prosperity of both our countries.

@Keir_Starmer You're thinking of stopping 15 year olds using Social Media, whilst also encouraging children at infant schools to embrace transgenderism because their parents think it's cool. Plus, those 15 year olds you don't want on Social Media, will be allowed to vote when they're 16 🤣

I know parents are worried about social media and its impact on their children’s safety. They rightly expect fast action. Today, I’m calling on senior leaders from X, Meta, Snap, YouTube and TikTok to step up. I will do whatever it takes to keep children safe online.

@miriam_cates So Miriam, are you claiming that minimum wage worker doesn't get assistance, via Universal Credit, to help pay rent and/or council tax? If they are a Mum, do they not also get child benefit? Do their children not get free dental care until they are 16?

Is the state pension really so 'meagre'? Let's take a look... The basic state pension is just £12,547 a year. But... Only around 15% of pensioners rely on the state pension alone. The vast majority have other income from private pensions etc., which is exactly how our system is designed to work (and why the UK has generous tax breaks for pension contributions). The small proportion of pensioners whose only source of income is the state pension are entitled to other benefits in addition, including pension credit, housing benefit and council tax support. A pensioner with no other income, no savings, no disabilities, no care responsibilities and rent of £800 per month is entitled to £401.55 a week in benefits including state pension, which is £20,881 a year. For comparison, a full time minimum wage worker has an after tax income of £21,364. Unlike a pensioner, a full time minimum wage worker is not entitled to free travel, free prescriptions, a winter fuel payment or senior citizens discounts. £21,000 a year is not a lot of money. But the very poorest pensioners have similar incomes to low-wage workers. Given the greater costs faced by those who are working, it's perhaps not surprising that working age adults are now more likely to live in poverty than pensioners. And at the other end of the scale, one in four pensioners are millionaires and still receive the basic state pension, paid for by current tax payers (including those on minimum wage). No one (definitely not me) is suggesting that the state pension should be reduced for the poorest pensioners. But pension spending now accounts for half of the UK's social security budget and, given the urgent need to cut government spending, we must consider reforms like means-testing and scrapping the triple lock.
Miriam Cates@miriam_cates

“Reform’s commitment to keep the triple lock is the final nail in the coffin for the hope of pension reform from the Right. Britain’s young people are now condemned to pay through the nose for the retirement of the wealthiest generation in history.” ✍️👇 conservativehome.com/2026/04/08/mir…

@BenGrahamUK I thought it odd when Starmer claimed it was a win for democracy. You're right, the new leader in Hungary is tougher on border control and immigration than his predecessor, which will surely lead to tension with the EU.

@KathyParr101 Considering the subject matter, that comment is a bit rich coming from a teacher with, no doubt, an unfunded public sector pension heading their way. Or are you one of the less than 10% of public sector workers who haven't joined your work's pension scheme?

@sue3563 Yes. As long as they don't have savings over £16,000. Which in itself is ridiculous. One year's rent & council tax payment for a pensioner with, let's say, £18,000 saved, would mean their savings might reduce by half, entitling them housing and council tax benefit the next year.

It absolutely is impossible to live on £12 500 a year. That’s why those whose only source of income is the state pension (just 15% of pensioners) are also entitled to a whole host of other benefits that raise their income to that of a full time worker. See here: x.com/miriam_cates/s…
Maria Caulfield CBE@mariacaulfield

@BBCNewsnight @miriam_cates That’s right tackle the easy pickings of pensioners with no other source of income and leave the explosion in those claiming UC, PIP etc . Many of these people only know wealthy pensioners, in the real world living on £12,500 is impossible

@miriam_cates @mariacaulfield We do not get free dental treatment & a whole host of other discounts (unless your on pension credit). We have to pay all the same bills, council tax , water rates etc as everyone else. In fact our energy bills are higher because we’re home more. We don’t get ours paid like MPs

@miriam_cates "Someone who rents at £800 a month"? Is that 'someone' you speak of someone who works or a pensioner who rents? A pensioner would get housing benefit and a worker on a low enough wage would get help via Universal Credit.

But if you own your own home you’re nearly £10 000 a year better off than someone who rents at £800 a month. And that £10K is an after tax expenditure, so represents around £13K of earned income. So a state pension of £12 500 for someone who owns their property is equivalent to a £25K salary for someone who rents. And £25K is above the minimum wage.

@miriam_cates "Entitled to a whole host of other benefits" You're right Miriam. The problem is they have to know they're entitled to them, then apply. So what percentage of that 15% apply? The problem with means-testing the state pension (other than including or not property) is the cost.

@maxsec I'm no fan of the BBC, but it's only the TV licence I want stopped. The BBC should become a commercial channel, which works perfectly well for ITV, Channel 4 etc.

So the BBC are cutting 2,000 jobs to save £500 million over the next 2 years. That makes the average wage of those 2,000 employees £125,000 a year. £125,000 of licence fee payers' money.

@AlexJJNorris Well that, Alex Norris, is a complete and utter lie. Whilst there was a high of 400 under the Tories, nearly half were closed by the Tories in time for the election. At the time of the July 2024 General Election there were 213 asylum hotels in use! You are a LIAR!

There were more than 400 asylum hotels under the previous government – that number has been more than halved, with 11 more closing this week. Labour is bringing the asylum system under control.

@jamesrbsimpson A vote for Restore Britain is a vote for a Labour/Green/Lib Dem/SNP coalition, and all that will entail. Open borders, rejoining the EU (without a referendum) and the further appeasement of the barbaric culture and religion that is Islam.

@Juntajuntanunta Whilst your point about tax cuts for billionaires and corporations is a valid point, your claim about deregulation is laughable. The UK spent nearly 50 years as a member of the most regulated trading bloc ever known, the EU. One this awful Government is intent on rejoining.

@panatheniac @DurhamWASP You missed the point, hon, correlation isn’t causation😜 Immigrants didn’t cause deregulation, tax cuts for billionaires, or the gutting of industry; those were political choices that funneled wealth upward. Britain’s richer than ever because of immigrants, not despite them…

Pensions aren’t piggy banks for governments to raid. But this Labour government is desperate. Today they forced through the power to control where your pension savings are invested. @Conservatives voted against it - and we'll do so again in the Lords next week.
