On the ground in Bengal, that logic is thin. Post-SIR anxieties, tactical voting, and political awareness still point to consolidation, not drift. A small Congress slice? Maybe. But a large shift
That is where the real question lies.
Yes, there is precedent. In the 2019 general election, a section of Muslim voters in Bengal did back PM Modi.
In Bihar’s Seemanchal too, the NDA managed to draw a slice of Muslim votes. But Bengal is not Bihar. Even the SIR narrative, which could have triggered similar anxieties, did not carry the same resonance in Bihar.
In Bengal, however, it became a central talking point on the ground, shaping conversations, perceptions, and participation.
Which is why a straightforward extrapolation may raise eyebrows. Not dismissing their claims, they may have their surveys and research.
Also, news organisations on ground and surveyors may draw information from different sources under different circumstances. But this claim looks really intriguing .
On the ground in Bengal, Muslim voting behaviour has remained deeply tactical and politically aware. A marginal shift towards here and there like one to the ISF is possible, but a significant drift towards the BJP runs against the grain of recent patterns. The logic here is not linear, it is highly layered and local.
And that is what makes this election a battle of nerves.
Because beyond the data, it is about perception versus instinct. The SIR factor has turned voting into an assertion of identity, voters showing up not just to choose, but to be counted. Add to this the surge of migrant voters, travelling long distances to secure their place on the rolls, and the electorate itself appears recalibrated and unpredictable.
Then comes the X-factor : Mamata Banerjee.
Her politics defies straight-line analysis. It is instinctive, relentless, and highly responsive to ground mood. The fact that she is out there through the night, even as exit polls attempt to shape perception is just not optics, it is her strategy. Because in Bengal, perception can shape cadre morale before results do. Following the exit poll results, she might have sensed a possibility of cadre disintegration, and hence she stormed in .
At the same time, this election has unfolded under an unusual calm. With heavy deployment overseen by the Election Commission of India, polling across both phases remained largely violence-free and free of widespread rigging, a rare break from Bengal’s past.
That has made the contest cleaner.
But also tighter. And far harder to call.
Because when past patterns do not fully apply, and present signals are mixed,
elections stop being about prediction and become about who holds their nerve till the very end.
