Yeah, but... that's not the point. The point is that D&D is important. Even in its damaged state it remains the hub around which everything else in the hobby orbits, and it is the game the overwhelming majority of people will start and finish their time in the hobby with. There's a big, big difference between the average person in the hobby (a D&D player) and a TTRPG enthusiast/hobbyist, and the fact remains that most people who enter the hobby will never play anything but D&D. Hell, statistically, most won't even play a variant of D&D, not even an older edition. Soup du Jour D&D, that's it. This reason alone is enough of a reason to refuse to cede D&D to the cultural vandals.

@KasimirUrbanski @Executionotron @EviI_Otto Every time I have seen people put up stats of what the masses are doing, that has always been a warning sign to me. Maybe it's the Christian side of me. I have never followed what the masses are doing (with the exception of voting for Trump).

What would it take for me to believe Wizards of the Coast is actually going to improve? I'd say at this point they would need to make penance by making a picture of an attractive female character in a chainmail bikini, kissing an attractive male character, both of them surrounded by the corpses of dead orcs and piles of treasure. And both of the characters have to be white. In other words an image so offensive to the left that it will prove that Wizards is no longer beholden to them.

Nobody is under any obligation to simply give ground. D&D was hotly contested BECAUSE of its cultural relevancy and its importance within the hobby. 95% of people coming into the TTRPG hobby will play D&D as their first game, most conversations and most norms within the greater hobby will be decided within the space D&D occupies. How a creature like the humble orc is presented in D&D is, actually, quite important.

@EviI_Otto @KasimirUrbanski Introduce them to other games, other systems. Think outside the bubble. Seriously, you don't have to bow to the almighty twenty-sided die. If a kid likes superheroes you don't force D&D on them. If a kid likes G.I. Joe you don't force D&D on them.... true story with that one.

American Fantasy is basically baseline fantasy. The influence D&D had on the way people view fantasy settings and even actual history is inescapable. Huge, empty spaces, days between settlements, enormous gold coins as base currency, the fact that every mainstream D&D setting is essentially a post apocalyptic version of the American Wild West kitted out as a renfair/SCA meet... Don't get me wrong, I love it, but it's not rare. It's completely ubiquitous, in fact. Nigh inescapable, I'd argue.

I would posit the reason why people can't recognize American Fantasy is because they look for elves and dwarves, etc. Meanwhile, Cryptids (Americana folklore) are more popular than they've ever been.

Wizards of the Coast drops new Villainous Options Unearthed Arcana playtest. Evil subclasses & paths to become a lich or death knight included. Is this giving players the dark side they crave or proof the game is abandoning heroic roots for edgelord power fantasy?

It is my firm belief that no DM in the entire history of roleplaying used a grell ever. Fight me.
