NEW: Hartford mayor fires officer who fatally shot man experiencing mental health crisis while holding knife On February 27, 2026, Hartford police responded to a mental health call on Blue Hills Avenue. Steven Jones, 55, was holding a large knife. Three officers spent over five minutes attempting to de-escalate as he walked into the street. Officer Joseph Magnano, the fourth officer on scene, approached with his gun drawn, warned Jones he would be shot, and fired nine times when Jones continued advancing with the knife. On March 27, 2026, Mayor Arunan Arulampalam terminated Magnano effective immediately, stating the officer’s actions were “deeply concerning” and did not meet professional standards. The Office of the Inspector General’s investigation remains ongoing. The Hartford police union has criticized the firing.
