They're asked to and do so as courtesy (except invaders who'll be covered by treaty/surrender terms), because they're not subject to our jurisdiction. Hope that helps.

@quichwe10 @ASFleischman Again, wrong kind of jurisdiction. Regardless, Indians who committed crimes outside the reservation pre-1924 were also subject to our laws the same as any citizen of another sovereign country. The treaty prevented US from enforcing laws on the reservation

@GrayBrantley @ASFleischman That Korean is subject to the jurisdiction of the US (As defined as being within the full reach and power of US courts) while he is within US territorial borders. Native Indians are subject to the jurisdiction of the US because they signed agreements saying so.

@quichwe10 @ASFleischman Are non-tribal countries not their own sovereigns? Any citizen of a foreign country is subject 2 the jurisdiction of their home country while in the US, unless we give them protection. A Korean pro golfer owns a home in ATL. He still had to return and serve military time.

@GrayBrantley @ASFleischman Even when on US soil, members of an Indian tribe still are formally under the jurisdiction of the tribe, the power to punish them from US courts is derived from the treaties. Every other group OTOH is within the reach of the power of American courts by dint of being on US land.

@ASFleischman Trumbull is on the record during the debates saying that phrase includes not owing allegiance to any other country. In Slaughter house and Elk cases, SCOTUS said it excluded “citizens or subjects of foreign states born within the US”. It’s fun when textualism meets originalism

@gdi_Neal @chriswithans I respectfully disagree. Those without a mortgage are at a significantly higher risk of title theft. Also, if you suffer catastrophic loss, a good lender can be your ally against the insurance company.

@chriswithans Having no mortgage payment leads to so much mental peace. Sure you might get better returns elsewhere, but the pride and peace from having a fully paid off home is priceless.

Just heard the best/worst caller on the Dave Ramsey podcast. Married couple, under 30. $145,000 household income. Came on the show to celebrate paying off the mortgage on their $450,000 Georgia home. Said they starting paying it off early 5 years ago, meaning they had a low interest rate home loan (probably <3%) and started to aggressively pay it down right as interest rates were starting to rise. Dave Ramsey loved it, launching into a lecture about how 26-year olds who say they can’t buy homes should look at this couple for inspiration. Hahaha.
