Nowadays, my motto is "Create good adopters, don't screen for them." And although I've moved up the career ladder quite a bit from adoption counseling, I do intend to lead by example in my communications and outreach.
Adoptions counseling should not be adoption gatekeeping.

I learned that most people who show up are receptive to education. They're there because they want to do a good thing, so even if they aren't prepared for pet ownership when they walk through the door, it was my job to counsel and support them, not make them prove themselves.

My views and philosophies have evolved so much in the 12 years that I've been involved in animal welfare.
At my first animal shelter job, I was 23 years old. I was hired as an adoption counselor and I set out with the intention of only placing animals in the "best" homes.

I will always defend animal shelters that are faced with euthanizing due to space despite utilizing every tool available to them. I have worked for those shelters. But MCACC actively turns their backs to people and data that can help, and people need to know that.

@JadeM2816 @jypseywheel Because they kill in the face of readily-available, cost-effective lifesaving alternatives they refuse to implement. And, as the Maricopa example shows, they punish those who try.

Some folks are writing things like ‘you’re going out a winner,’ which would be true if you were ‘going out,’ but I have a feeling they’ll reinstate you, & if they choose to further embarrass themselves & don’t reinstate u, a judge will. I want to be clear that @MCanimalcare consists of MANY advocates working there. They're just a lot better at keeping it under wraps than I am. And the fact that they feel they need to speaks to a whole different issue. I'm an advocate for the people just as much as the animals.
