🧵1/3 Here’s a breakdown of what I saw change with Andrew Heaney between his 2022 season and 2023 It illustrates the importance of pitch usage, location & tunneling, and swing rate Always important to know the downstream affects of a change @MLBNetwork @BaseballMentors

“Pitch metrics aren’t worth anything if you can’t stay on the field” -MiLB ATC Some of the nastiest pitches are created w/funky movements…but are they sustainable? A player’s health matters the most. Sacrificing health for stuff is a recipe for a short career @BaseballMentors

In pitch design, stop thinking about a number on a screen and start thinking about what the hitter is seeing The name of the game isn’t who can get the nastiest movement, it’s HOW CAN YOU FOOL A HITTER Put yourself in the batters box, what makes it hard to hit @FlatgroundApp

What is the effect of the adjacent finger’s pressure on the ball? Pay attention to what you do with your fingers on certain grips…are they loose or tight? Now, how does that affect the finger next to it? Can we create pressure on the ball by manipulating fingers off it?

YES! I see too many guys trying to teach/copy a trendy pitch b/c numbers look good on Trackman BUT if it doesn’t work well w/your other pitches it won’t be effective What works for one, does not work for all -FB shape -Rel PT -Velo -Complimentary pitches …all matters
Art Of Baseball@ArtOfBaseball

Instead, design secondary pitches to optimize the CONTRAST with your unique fastball shape (or whatever pitch is acting as your fastball) on both a DIRECTIONAL and PLANAR level. Your production will skyrocket. 🚀🚀🚀

Don’t just chase an arbitrary shape on a movement plot… …Even if it has significant value for another pitcher.

Scatter plots of multiple data points are one of the most underutilized reference tools in pitching. Everyone is obsessed with maximizing a pitcher’s physical performance. Few search for (and leverage) what makes a pitcher unique from the crowd. Hitters hate unique.

Command problems are often not solved by practicing more command. Here are other common solutions to get in the zone more often:

Finch vs. Pujols: Why it makes sense 1. Outlier Release Pt (to Pujols) 2. Power Rising FB (elite VAA) 3. + Attack Angle Swing Pujols's swing does not match up to Finch's fastball up, the pitch & swing planes don't match, favoring Finch @FlatgroundApp
