Representation Matters That’s why we are working towards improving the visibility of women & their contributions to science in school curricula We want to #IncludeHer 💜 Find out more about our mission at includeher.au #InternationalWomensDay #WomenInSTEM #IWD2024
Australian Academy of Science@Science_Academy

#InternationalWomensDay – Women are still only 27% of STEM workers in Australia, but more women are studying STEM at university. From 2015 to 2021, women’s enrolment in STEM courses grew by 31%. Representation matters. 📈

@mel_zax @astro_katross Hi Mel, we have seen the new F-10 curriculum and some of our team provided some feedback during the process. We are very happy that there has been a clear effort to address gender bias there! We hope to further discuss the F-10 curriculum with experts to further improve it.

@IncludeHer_STEM @astro_katross You are conflating state and territory senior curricula with the Australian Curriculum F-10 Version 9, which includes a number of women from diverse cultural backgrounds in the elaborations. Check out the reference to the Matilda Effect and bias in science!

Did you catch @astro_katross on The Project? Not only is the Australian science curriculum lacking in the representation of women, it is also behind in the level of science taught! It’s time to include more science and #IncludeHer in schools 📚 #ScienceEducation #WomenInSTEM

Our study found that out of 145 scientists mentioned in the curricula, there was only 1 female scientist 😱 And our team of researchers are actually from lots of different institutions across Australia, working together to #IncludeHer 💜 #WomenInSTEM

👩‍🔬A team of researchers from @ICRAR and @CurtinUni say high school science courses in Australia fail to mention the contributions of #womeninSTEM , and instead focus on a male-centric narrative

@barrygoldman1 @Helen_E_MC The ‘old’ science is definitely a factor! However, the curriculums at present have the capacity to have more diverse representation.

@IncludeHer_STEM @Helen_E_MC i wonder if also, this is a sign that there is only VERY OLD science in the curriculum. which is also predictably boring which school mostly is.
