@vibhu [ex-Amazon 19 year vet/VP here] DTC undervalues operations. Most founders come from a branding background and are wonderful peace time CEOs. #blands Most do not understand the sequential maturity of operations that lends leverage on margin and growth.

An opinion I've been afraid to share: I think that DTC has failed, overall. I've helped launch more brands than anyone else so maybe there's something to it. The brands we hold up as beacons have been unprofitable for years. Every IPO tanks. Acquisitions are quickly sunset.

Can't think of a worse assertion than consumers don't want home deliver less and less. 2 decades at Amazon taught me that convenience always wins. What's more convenient than a packing showing up on your doorstep? retailtouchpoints.com/topics/consume…

@digitallynativ It amazes me how many of the 2019s didn't transition from launch mode to scale mode, though.

2019: It has never been easier and more efficient to launch an online store 2022: It has never been easier and more efficient to open a physical retail store

1/ The COO role, more than most positions at a startup, appears ambiguous to many people. That’s partly because the role changes depending on a company’s size, industry, stage, CEO, and many other factors. Here is my take on what makes a great COO. 🧵

Now this is GOLD. Business Insider is using a #pitchdeck that was never presented to anyone as a pay wall magnet. 😆🤣
Jason Murray@JasonShipium

Here's a fun story - We spent months on our pitch deck... only to never give it once en route to landing our Series A! One of my favs @emmacos covered the story and shared our deck-that-never-was in her story about our raise this morning. businessinsider.com/shipium-series…

@retailgeek It really is quite fascinating. Never forget that One-Click-Checkout was only ever 10% growth at Amazon at it's peak. And now the idea has been commodified to the max thanks to Apple et al...

@digitallynativ Sorry to be a "reply guy", just on Twitter atm. Carrier Tax is usually 12% of P&L. We (@shipiumdotcom) are laser focused on reducing that 5%-10%. We're the best route to relieve that tax rate. Exactly how we are thinking too. (Just sharing we are kindred spirits on this.)

I can’t shake the feeling that if each of these ‘tax rates’ were lessened, and Brands were allowed to maximize growth opportunity, the businesses that benefit from this ‘tax’ collection would capture the upside with volume while also allowing the Brand to prosper Win Win (2/2)

I’ve been thinking about this a lot: DTC Brands pay an incredible amount of ‘taxes’ to do business: FB Tax Fulfillment Tax Carrier Tax Tech Subscriptions Tax Etc. All of these taxes erode margin and constrain the ability to profit and turn that profit back into growth (1/2)

@digitallynativ For sure (former 19-year / VP here) Growth levers were: Price+Selection+Convenience The thing is Price/Selection are played out. No comp edge now. Convenience is 50% shopping exp & 50% shipping exp. The Fast thing is confirming: the shopping half is commodified, too. 🤔

@JasonShipium Had to add product selection/assortment to the equation for Amazon, but I agree!

I hate dunking on eCom startups and I would never root against them, but I feel like we all knew one-click checkout was a commodity. And more broadly any eCom cart is a commodity
