Providence’s professional basketball team, The Friars, are a major draw in downtown/Federal Hill. So too is PPAC, Trinity, etc. But, the fact that the city is generally so quiet at night is troubling from an economic and character standpoint. Need that night mayor concept.

@StephMachado @DanMcGowan Actually, what if the mall could be a regional center for play (toys, games, recreation/entertainment, innovation, invention) with Hasbro as the anchor and a unique identity for the creative capital of the fun-sized state!

If you wanted to invest $500 a month into the American economy, you can do that with the S&P 500 If you wanted to invest $500 a month into the city you live in, what would you do?

@jamesrambin @housebostonorg Do you know of any strategies to counter these strong negative emotional responses to bikes and bike infrastructure? Do you know of anyone researching this?

incredible how mad this makes people. completely benign statement about the personal financial benefits of driving less, it’s not bait, he never says everyone has to do it, and people just can’t stop seething in the replies about a bunch of hypotheticals they made up

I live without a car and it is amazing. No car payment. No gas. No car insurance. No surprise mechanic bills. I only have 3 real expenses: rent, groceries, and health insurance.

@Boenau In all seriousness, I think this does bring up a very real point about how impossibly difficult modern parenting is and how that impacts opinions about the built environment. Growing expectations + shrinking "villages" = preferring speed/convenience to try to do it all alone.

@waham @RIlegoartist As a frequent visitor to both Farm Fresh and Water fire Arts Center, I see a lot of opportunities for connecting events and businesses on either side!

@RIlegoartist Actually, I'm feeling ambivalent about the bridge. It's a nice feature, but $1.7M? The rest of the changes will be great, tho. I hope the bridge and path are maintained well.

In other bridge news: After a long wait, Providence is slated to install 80-foot ped/bike bridge across the Woonasquatucket River at Kinsley/Sims Aves this summer (cost $1.7M), the 1st of many "separated shared use path" changes planned along Valley corridor to Providence Place.

Second Street Housing: Living next to, but not on top of main street. While most US/Canadian apartments are built on busy streets (Corridor zoning), we ought to look at next street over. alfredtwu.medium.com/second-street-… 1/

@_holyspokes @HousingNetwrkRI @homesRI_ @projo Well said! And think of the economic impacts of this investment, when more people have more of their income leftover to spend in the local economy or even start their own new business. A vibrant place means more state revenue to invest in schools, parks, etc!

Scientific American says KIDS MUST PLAY. But "Only 10 % of U.S. schools let people into their playgrounds when school's out, the Trust for Public Land found." Open 'em up & 5.2 million more kids get access. Also: Renormalize unsupervised play! @sciam @LetGrowOrg @tpl_org

Good Read: “Let the kids play in the dirt, climb on the rocks & even add some wood logs to the mix so they can get even more creative.” How to design the perfect (and actually more “risky”) city playground. Remember, risk & hazards aren’t the same thing. theglobeandmail.com/life/home-and-…
