YOU KNOW WHAT? Storms in my life? Yes, there have been hurricanes, tornadoes, and floods like you’ve never seen. But you know what? Jesus calms the storms. He calms the seas and parts the waters. He has calmed every storm in my life. I won’t say it was easy, but I know I have the most powerful help I could ever call on. Pride? No, not me. I thought I had never been prideful a day in my life. That was just a lie Satan made me believe. We all know pride comes before the fall, and I fell so hard I almost didn’t survive. But you know what? My Savior was there to catch me, not just once but many, many times. Control? I used to think I was in control. All those positive-thinking preachers say we’re in charge of our own destiny and we can save ourselves if we just stay positive. So I went out thinking I had it all under control. Satan let me believe that for a long time until the day I saw my life lying in pieces right in front of me. But you know what? I finally learned that the Almighty is the one in control. He is the Captain of this ship, and now it’s smooth sailing. Bring on the waves and bring on the storms. As long as I’m anchored in the good harbor, I’m safe from all destruction. Ego? Who, me? Anyone who knows me would say yes, Sherry has an ego. I wasn’t ready to look honestly at the chaos I was making in my life. Nope, not until everything fell apart. But you know what? God loves me just as I am. Praise God! Guilt? Oh yes, I know guilt very well. I carried it for a long time. It almost destroyed me. There were days I didn’t even want to live anymore. It hit me harder than anything else in my life. It stopped me from loving myself and stood in the way of everything good. But you know what? When the Lord forgave me, He didn’t just forgive me. He forgot. That’s right, He forgot my sins completely. He threw them into the deepest sea and never remembers them again. It’s Satan who tries to make us believe we can’t be loved after the terrible things we’ve done. He wants us to suffer with that guilt forever. Sin? Yes, for years I made excuses for my sin. I’d say it’s okay because everyone else is doing it, or it’s someone else’s fault. I used every excuse you can think of. But then came the day I looked in the mirror and couldn’t even stand to look at myself. Nobody thought Sherry would live to be 69 years old. But you know what? Jesus died on the cross for me. He gave me and you victory over sin and death. The day I fell to my knees and admitted my sin, I felt His hand on me. Don’t ever think you’re alone, my friends. The Lord is always there. It’s up to us to seek Him. So I thank God for my Grandpa and Grandma Baker. Grandpa R.B. Baker stood behind the pulpit at Northridge Baptist Church in Dayton, Ohio. I was sitting there by myself that day. I felt something was different. He preached a powerful sermon about the Cross. When it was time for the benediction, they sang “Just As I Am.” I’ll never forget that hymn as long as I live. I waited and waited, too scared to move. But the preacher knew someone needed to come forward, so he said, “We’ll sing one more stanza.” I stepped out into the aisle with tears running down my face. I was shaking as I walked to the altar. I told my Grandpa, “I don’t want to go to hell.” That day I felt whiter than snow, completely pure. I was only eight years old. That moment saved me from a life that should have ended many times through destruction, danger, or my own bad choices. Because you know what? I’m one of the flock. I’m the sheep the Shepherd left the others to go find. Yes, I strayed, but He found me. For those of you out here that find yourself in turmoil, whether you or seeking sobriety or recovery from anything that steers your life, the answers you seek lie in the people who have been there who are now witnesses to the Almighty power of God. He saved me, and I am now His witness. For I once was broke and am now UNBROKEN.

And yet, even in that darkness, something endured: the will to live, to remember, to rebuild. 73 years ago, on April 15, 1945, British troops liberated the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp in Germany. It was the first time many of them had taken part in a Jewish service in 6 years.
