I have a lot of time for Clouston, but this is the wrong move - an attempt to grab attention which won't actually give the SDP any popular relevance but which will reduce their ability to operate as a think tank which builds policy for Reform (which is what they should be doing).

We need to put up the deposit for standing for election, as well as the minimum threshold for it being returned. It hasn't increased with inflation in over 40 years. Had it kept up with inflation, it would be worth £2,000 from 1985.
This is getting absurd (the Clacton by-election itself is absurd, but this is a more general point). We are increasingly attracting narcissists, fantasists, and assorted self-promoters to stand for Parliament (beyond usual fare for politicians!).
Taxpayers, of course, pay for these self-promoters' self-indulgence through the free post to every constituent, which is worth well over the £500 deposit.

Thatcher - for all her many, many faults - was absolutely right to send a task force to reclaim the Falklands. And Michael Foot, then leader of the opposition, was right to give her his total backing. Argentina has no legitimate claim on the islands. They are British by right and by the democratic will of Falklanders.
