While #COVID19 has been difficult for everyone, imagine you are a young person just out of jail or on parole. During the pandemic, the Compass Rose Collaborative, led by @FHI360, continues to help youth navigate past incarceration. bit.ly/3hAmHYB @NIWLLisa

A8. Read and share @FHI360 & @CLASP_DC’s From #SurvivingtoThriving report. It offers programmatic solutions that support second chances. The collection was informed by work from the Compass Rose Collaborative, funded by @USDOL. #SecondChanceMonth bit.ly/Surviving2thri…

#secondchancemonth A7. Employers can also fear returning Vets who have PTSD. Like returning citizens, however they are motivated, have skills and work hard.

A7. Many programs, through @FHI360, @leagueofcities & @TheNYEC, have advocates that provide character & skills references for returning citizens who have completed education/training programs. #SecondChanceMonth

Q7: What would you say to employers or higher learning institutions that may think that hiring someone with a past is too risky? Are there effective risk management models that can be replicated? #SecondChanceMonth

A4. Occupational licensing in certain sectors is not always available for someone with a criminal record; this locks out #fairchance hiring in many industries. #SecondChanceMonth

A3. @FHI360’s partner, @OPP_Helps_Youth helps provide #fairchance hiring for previously incarcerated youth. They hire youth ambassadors and participants from the Compass Rose Collaborative. #SecondChanceMonth

Q3: Giving returning neighbors a #secondchance by offering them a job is certainly a direct benefit to them, but what are other benefits of #fairchance hiring? What unique things have formerly incarcerated people brought to your team? #SecondChanceMonth (1/2)

A3: People with criminal records are just that: people. People with skills, people with talents which can benefit any business. Employers I have spoken with say system impacted people are some of their best employees: committed, hard-working and respectful #SecondChanceMonth

Q2: According to the #PFBarnaPoll, while support for the concept of #secondchances is strong among Americans, there is not as much support when asked to apply that concept in practical & policy terms. How has your co. or edu program supported second chances? #SecondChanceMonth

We dream of return to normality but for millions “normality is cruel enough.” Now is the time to fight for “a reopening where black doesn’t mean sicker, Latino doesn’t mean lower wages, and poor doesn’t mean unreliable food or housing." nymag.com/intelligencer/… via @intelligencer

#SecondChance2020 Offer training to youth behind the walls so they leave with skills to walk into work with access to meaningful high wage jobs. Offer post-release requirements (parole appts, drug tests, etc.) at times that don’t interfere with their education and job schedules.

The focus here should be on equity versus equality. This way the re-entry population can have access to the right program and supportive services, as needed. Again, this can be different for each youth so we need a personalized approach. #SecondChance2020
