@Aunindyo2023 But overall point is correct. The muted FMCG sales = shrinking wallets. One more marker is Colgate Palmolive. A narrower segment. Toothpaste toothbrush penetration itself is not that high and their products are at the upper end. The other one is shoes = flat for years

One more symptom of the Economic Stress Disease afflicting India's middle-class: The financial results of India's biggest consumer company Hindustan Unilever (HUL). Even if you don't know much about the company, you would know its key brands - Surf Excel, Red Label tea, Horlicks, Sunsilk shampoo, Close Up toothpaste, Dove soap, among many others. They make up the every day life of most middle-class homes. Now, the very least HUL ought to do, is that its sales should grow roughly at the same rate as overall household consumption. In 2025-26, household consumption in India grew by nearly 9%. HUL's product sales grew by just 5.3%. In real, inflation-adjusted terms, household consumption grew 7.7%. HUL's underlying volume growth - stripped of price hikes - was just about 4%. This is despite 6 months of GST-cuts, which should have increased sales volumes. In a growing economy, more and more people ought to buy increasing amounts of consumer goods, especially FMCG. That has clearly not happened in 2025-26.
